Yesterday, I was able to get my electrolysis rig out and "cook" the watch case that I recovered out of the water on Monday. It was really caked-over with gunk. The hard water around here makes some heavy deposits on objects almost like salt water does. After a few minutes "cooking" in the electrolysis tank, I started noticed a nice yellow color coming from part of the watch case. I knew there was an inscription of some kind on the back, as I could make part of it out before I even started the process. I was hoping that the case would be gold. Some light brushing with a nylon-bristled brush revealed the numbers on the face of the watch, although the face-plate is gone. After repeated "cooking" and light brushing on the back, I finally revealed the entire inscription, which consisted of two sets of initials, and two years, to read "J.S.M. C.W.M. 1900 1940". As I was looking, I finally found what I was looking for, a jewelry marking. It's marked 10K Gold Filled, and has a maker's mark, which I can't quite make out yet. It's not a good solid alloy, but it's better than nothing. Here's the cleaned-up pic:
