Update on experimental digger #1

. first posted this in March and is still not completely finished yet. But i had to send some pcs in after welding the handle.
Here goes, Epi

Looks wicked !

Looks like it will cut through small roots no problem......hh.....Dan

keep up the cool tools and always go out and use them to see how they do in the real world but you are on the right track give me a free one and i will test it out and see how it does ,

Wicked looking - - - but needs only one large square notch 2 inches from the tip. Grabs those small tree roots and breaks them easy with 1 or 2 good yanks up. Used a Dremel tool to modify my Lesche digger that way.

Epi---Is the blade "offset" enough from the handle for the prying up of a cut plug? (similar to the Lesche knife)----Also, some of the new Lesche knives are "right handed" knives--the serrated teeth being on the left side of the blade (as you look from the handle to the point of the knife).---I have a couple of them & really like them.--Something I wish they would have done with that knife a long time ago--(instead of the teeth on the right side of the blade).----I wonder if serrated teeth are really necessary on both sides of the blade?---I guess it would lend itself to more "universal" use (with teeth on both sides).-----Just trying to inject a little meaningful "food for thought" here! :)----One thing I really like (demand) is an offset blade (from the handle).---I've pinched my fingers between the handle & ground when prying up a plug so many times it "ain't even funny"!----You have a very sturdy (indestructable) looking knife there--really looks good.---I hope the blade is "offset" from the handle enough.---------Del

I missed the measurements in the March posting.---What is the length of the blade & handle?--------Thanks, Del

Del, I was going to post this when completely finished but here goes .170 thick x 1 1/2 wide x 6 3/4 long. The metal is M-2 (high speed steel) 60-62 Rockwell.
The handle position would not be to your liking . The handle is 5" Long an the guard is 1 1/2 high. I originally made a knife type handle and was to be centered to the blade like
a hunting knife but I made some mistakes and this metal carrodes easily so decided not to use it on this one and went with a Lesche type handle. If you can give me the dimension from the bottom of the blade to the center of the handle would be appreciated.

As far as the serrations go, one side is .070 thick with staggered teeth to saw through roots and the other side will be sharpened to a straight edge, it is not sharpened yet. How do you like the magnetic part of it?

Thanks for the tip.
Epi

GunnarMN, I went dirt digging every weekend and any chance i got. But am currently hooked on the beach and water hunting. It may not see dirt until
after the swimming season.
Lets me think about it. 40 hrs precision work.Tool steel which cut through an aluminum handle bar like butter with the staggered teeth side.Magnetic tip for small annoying nails and 14 oz. weight.
For Free,HHHmmmmm I,ll sleep on it. LOL

Thanks for the reply and the offer.

EPI, the square notch measures 5/16" wide x 3/16" deep. Grabs roots up to about 3/8" thick and breaks them with a good yank or two. The square notch near the handle was my first attempt, wrong place, has to be close to the tip. Also made all the slits wider, used a Dremel.

I get it put root in he and pull. Maybe in one of my next designs . I think maybe round or oval hooking type action.
Thanks, Jabbo
