Hi Steve; I have "SEVERE" back problems. I fell 17 stairs head over heels and literally shattered every vertebrae in my spine from head to toe. I've been "PARALYZED" 14 times from my chest down and I've had 6 operations so far; but I still go detecting hahaha. Anyway it sounds like you've got a slipped or ruptured disc.. It is NOT something to play with or ignore. Go in have a CAT scan done. Then see he Orthopedic Surgeon. "IF" you need surgery I PROMISE you will be up and running in 4 - 6 weeks. You'll feel like a new man physically. I say this from experience. I also base this on the info you provided. You said it hurts constantly for a year now. That going digging hurts you more. The reason is the disc presses on the nerve group in the spine. When you go digging you place eta stress on that disc and thus the nerves. That's why it hurts so much. Your therapy is like putting a band aid on a heart attack. It's only going to get worse.!!!!! Trust me on this one ok. I wish you all the best. PEACE:RONB
