unlucky waterhunter :-(

Got my brand new CTX and was excited to do some water hunting in the saltwater... Purchased GG headphones, made sure that the battery oring was seated good and clean, made sure that all of the cables was nice and tight, made sure that the USB connector cap was tight and I jumped in the water. At waist deep water I turned on the unit, made 5 sweeps and detected a target, squeezed the pinpoint button, dug the target, then the unit shut off... the unit was good for a total of 30 seconds with the control panel at only 2 feet under water. I immediately took the unit out of the water and rinsed it off and took it home. The battery compartment was dry but I did have some condensation on the inside of the screen... :-(

, Above the battery, did you take that part off, it's not waterproof, and did you screw the cap onto the headphone connection to keep the water out.

Yes, I had to take off the cover because I had the waterproof headphones connected... The water didn't leak in the battery compartment, it leaked in the control panel. You can see the condensation in the screen. I made sure that the USB cap was on nice and tight too.

Have you tried it again? What was air temp and what was water temp? Warm machine and cold water could cause a tiny bit of fog moisture I suppose.

If you have tried it again and it will will not power up, Like Des D I suggest you do some of the same things, just to eliminate the obvious causes. Put fresh alkalines in the batt pack and try it again. Charge the other batt pack (there have been issues with the battery and the charger) test the voltages across the terminals and try it again. If it still will not power up and if you still think you see moisture in the screen do the old smart phone thing and pack it is dry rice for a few hours . That is supposed to pull the moisture out of the air around or in the machine (and I have little faith that might work). If it still will not power up and you got it from a local dealer I would take it back to them for assistance. Maybe they have another in stock as this one obviously was defective. If you send it back to Minelab in Ill., you can expect at least a 3-5 week delay.

The battery was fully charged and I also tested it with the alkaline pack with fresh batteries and it still didn't turn back on... I know that In order to have condensation in the screen means that there had to be moisture in tbe machine already or it leaked. I am sure that it did not already have moisture in it... I only had the machine for 2 days and before this incident I hadn't taken the machine to the beach. Again, the machine didn't leak in the battery compartment and I know what you are talking about the "temperature". I didn't take the machine from the hot trunk, I took it from an air conditioned back seat...

Dude,
Bummer.
If you've got water under/inside the screen, you should have already been on the phone to Minelab. That's obvious water damage, and any other advise you get is wishful thinking.
Sorry, man.
:(
Good Luck,
mike

Lol, I sent it into Minelab a few days ago... good thing I have two excals as backup units. The only problem with the excals is that it chatters to much at some of the beaches from black sand and EMI and that is why I got the CTX...

Minelab will fix you up right, although I understand this weather has played havoc with their turn-around times.
Good luck, and HH (those Excals are fine machines in their own right)

:)

Received a call from Kellyco and they said that they think that it leaked from the contol housing or the speaker and that it had nothing to do with the USB port... they are sending me a new unit

My only gripe is that I sent in an excal to get repaired on the same day as I sent the CTX in and I recieved the excal back 2 days ago. I just got conformation yesterday that the new CTX has been shipped but the estimated delivery day is not until next week Tuesday... Weird that the machine that has to be repaired has a faster turn around time than a machine that has to be replaced and then they snail mail the brand new $2500 unit... I hope the new unit doesn't leak!

I feel that the problem is water temp. You said you dove in.I feel most problems happen because people don't give the machine enough time to expand or contract , what ever the case might be.I am terrified to dive with mine. That shouldn't be.

It wasn't the temperature it was a faulty unit... It didn't leak in the battery compartment or through the USB cap, it leaked in the housing. Weather I dunk the machine in fast or slowly ease it in the water a $2500 "water machine" should not leak!

They did send me another unit and so far I have taken it in the water 5 times and it has been great! I love the machine, I just wish that it was louder, so I can hear it when my head goes underwater.
