Unknown Ring Marking

Mat in MA

Member
My wife has an old ring that was her Grandmothers. It's a nice ring, but it's the marking on the band that I am curious about.

Most bands will have a karat number (10k, 14k, etc) to tell you the amount of gold in the ring.

This ring just has the letter "A" followed by a five point star (see photo below of ring and band). Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks in Advance.

Here's the ring.

Here's the mark inside the band.

You could do an acid test to see if its 10k 14k 18k etc. if you dont have the proper acids a jeweler could do the test

Hello Mat, rings manufactured previous to the early 1900s, were not subjected to karat stamps, as I understand it. Not sure what the official date is though. Many of the older rings will not have a karat stamp at all. Let us know what you find out. May be a good idea to have a professional appraisal, savvy?

Check out websites for hallmarks. You should be able to find out about it. I've heard of rings with that particular hallmark before. You should be able to date the ring by the hallmark. Hope you find it on the net.

The ring is older than 1850 .the Stamp inside is from the maker.old rings has no carat numbers inside like (585,999).
