Unknown object. Could yall help identify?

I found this today while detecting in a field near a park in Jacksonville, AL. The object is made of iron & has a hole thru the side & thru the top. My guess would be that something slid into the top & then had something pushed thru the side hole to keep it in, but that's just a wild guess. Any help identifying would be much appreciated.

It looks like part of a wrench, the hole in the handle is for the adjustment of the jaws. The top of the wrench is missing which would have slide up and down the center shaft. If you go to antique wrench images in google you can see some that look similar. Just my guess.
