I found this yesterday about 10ft away from where I found the cast I. It is about the size of a quarter ,around 3/4 of an inch tall and has that nice green brass look to it. It also has threads inside of it with a small hole through it. Any info on this item will be greatly appreciated,Jonathon.

Hi Johnny,
Sorry it's taken me a little while to get back to you on this. My job is demanding and doesn't leave a lot of time.
I'll try to enclose two photos with this. Anyway, it may also be the striker part of a shell and the hole is for the safety pin to immobilize the sliding inside tube with the percussion cap on it. I'll keep looking for some more of the pictures of it. You might want to check the threads also. It seems some of the English Shells are left-handed threads. Let me try to get the pictures on here. I see the top of your cap is missing. Can you tell if it is broken off the top or a smooth ,finished cut? It's possible that it is blown off the shell. Can you tell if the threads are stripped? This is just my perspective from what I can see in your picture. Hope it helps.

The threads on my piece are right handed. The threads are also worn down a little but, not actually striped out. The top of it seems to be finished, but I see a piece of the top that is kinda rough also, looking at it now that is because the threads start in that area all the way to the top. Thanks for your help Trocar and any info you can dig up on it, Jonathon.

Hi Jon,

It's an ox horn tip. They were screwed onto the tips of oxen horns to keep them from goring things. The small hole was for a set screw. I'm betting the larger, threaded hole in yours is tapered, no? Sometimes they are and sometimes not. We find them all over New England - and I have so many that I've got a coffee can dedicated to just them. You'll find them in all different sizes - some faceted for use with a wrench, and some just round balls. Not to be confused with lug nuts - which wouldn't have a set screw - and wouldn't be tapered. Oxen weren't used much later than the 19th century - so it's probably from that era, though I have run across a farmer who remembers them from his youth.
Hope that helps. -Dan
