So I have been detecting now for three years and have been ok with my ace 250 being its all I can afford but after today I have got to find away to get something better! What happened was I thought I would try and hunt a old home site so I walked about a mile in the woods.well when I get there I'm ready to get at it and had my hopes up sence there's nobody around here that detects so I was hoping to find some old coins,I have yet to find any now don't get me wrong I have found some really good finds as far as gold rings and chains go,have already found 2 rings and a 10k rope chain with 14k pendent and a lot of clad already this year but nothing old anyways I start swinging and right away I get a 25 cent tone and it was steady about 4 inches so I go to digging and guess what a peace of tin well I move on and again a dime tone dig a get a peace of tin well this went on and on till I was about ready to sling the ace up beside a tree but thought better so I just picked up and made the long walk back home. So if anybody ask if the ace 250 is good at hunting old home sites NO!! It sucks ,recovery speed sucks I have got to find something better a teknetics g2 or t2 I was thinking about a at pro but the recovery speed and target separation would have to be A LOT better!
Oh well I just needed to vent LOL I still like my ace for what it is which ant much but it all I have and I really love detecting I go about 4 days aweek for around 6 hours so I know my detector. Anyways thanks for letting me vent I feel better now ! HH

I search woods a lot and from my experience I can tell you this. Old shotgun shells, old coins, etc are less than 6 inches deep, more like 3 - 4 inches and they are spread far apart. Also most of the finds I make are close to the road, almost nothing but a few bullets and shotgun shells will be found deep in the woods. Old cellar holes are surrounded by tons of small scrap metal and mixed in that mess are the old coins, detecting is real tough around cellar holes. Many times I come out of the woods without finding a single coin, just old shotgun shells and they were only a few inches deep but I dig some of them because it might be an Indian Head penny. Two days ago in the woods, close to an ancient corn field, I dug a 1700's Colonial British penny, and as usual it was very shallow, less than 3 inches. Several lead bullets were found too but no other coins. The Ace 250 can find old stuff in the woods.

A lot of it is about being in the right place at the right time. I had an Ace 250 when I picked up the hobby again in 2010. I found a silver Peace dollar and a Franklin half dollar my first month out with it. So the Ace will find the goodies, but it is also a case of getting what you pay for. Good detector, but can only do so much. I would recommend the AT Pro as your next upgrade, I have one to accomodate my Explorer. Much better target separation with the 8X11 and 5X8 DD coils ... I bought the 2-coil package. If you are using the stock coil that came with the 250, you might want to consider buying a DD coil for it. Targets will start popping out between trash signals. A less expensive alternative to buying a new detector. Good luck !

Unfortunately, old tin will sound like coins in almost all detectors. Don't blame the ACE. It's like gold and pulltabs have similar responses. Nature of the beast.

Many items will id or sound off that are not coins ......... This is especially true at old home sites.. You get readings that ID as halves, Dimes, Quarters, and it is Tin, Old cans, metal roof pieces, Brass parts, and just plain old junk that reads good.. All detectors will do this.

Go back turn up the sensitivity, hunt slow, and see what you can recover... Unless you find a cache it's more than likely you will not find a lot of coins.. Maybe a few if your lucky. The ones you do find should be period coins and good finds..

Yes there are what people perceive to be better detectors than your model..but the better detectors will hit the junk too.. Your detector is very adequate to make the old coin finds if within it's depth capabilities..

when targets are far apart. You won't need the extra depth that AM provides but you will get a wider coverage from the coil. And that means less targets will be missed. Disc mode has a narrower penitration into the soil but is better where there is a lot of junk targets.

Thanks for the replys, but I already know about others sounding off like coins but with the ace its got a slow recovery speed and yes I tried other modes and turned senc down it just want separate the good from bad,I know this detector I have put about 6 hours a day 4 days a week for 3 years doing water hunting ,banks of river beaches and parks and it does ok and I have thought about the 5x8 dd coil but with the recovery speed being as slow as it is,it just don't seem worth it
Thanks again HH

If my detectors were 100% correct on target ID - I would be rich! All your machine or any other for that matter gives you the conductivity of metal. Lot's of things mimic good targets. It's really not the machine but rather the trashy environment your hunting. Old home sites are perhaps the worst. I would suggest to use a Sniper coil and run no more than 4 bars of sensitivity. I would also suggest the same power or less with the stock coil too. This may net you some good stuff. I would also cherry pick at first by rejecting tabs and below.

All metal mode on the 250 is not a true all metal mode. I have found no depth loss in applying discrimination. Notch machines just don't loose depth as with the variable disc machines.
