Out of boredom last night I reloaded v3.2 into my Deus for today's hunt, and didn't really expect much difference in performance. After I "updated" the software last night I went out to my test garden where I have a couple of 8-9" coins buried to see if the same programs would hit any differently.
The 12 khz programs seemed to hit marginally better on deeper targets...but the biggest difference was 8 and 18 khz will now hit deeper targets MUCH better in Reactivity 2 and 3. I set up a program that I would use in the field, rather than opening up the Deus all the way which is unrealistic for me - I wanted to see if a "tried and true" field program would actually hit deeper targets any more confidently. 4 khz doesn't seem any different in Reactivity 3 and higher - I urge you to reload v3.2 for yourself (copy all custom programs first!) and see what kind of results you may get...especially if you've used a Deus for a few months...
So after a software reload, I was able to join Gerald and Dad at the rental we hit last Monday. Started off in 12 khz Reac 2 and began on the side of the house, away from the front yard where Gerald and I have hammered into oblivion (so I thought) on previous hunts. Made my way along a curb strip and was digging shallow clad here and there, and then came upon a solid "92" which turned out to be a sterling St Christopher's medal - this curb strip was fairly trashy, but this signal stood out from the background chatter and locked on after a couple of swings. Got a smooth 1917 Wheat a little later, and then all three of us would start on the smallish backyard in earnest.
EMI got to be bothersome, even when I turned TX to "1", and this didn't seem to help the chatter much at all. Switching to 4 khz made it worse, so I didn't move from 12 khz the entire hunt. I eliminated N2 which usually takes care of some aluminum siding scraps, pulltabs, and junk - knowing that the front yard had to be holding something that was previously notched. We spent about and hour and a half in the backyard - all of us were finding Wheats every so often to keep the spirit alive! I passed over a hole where Dad pulled a Wheat to get a very faint hit, reading "79". From about 8" deep came a nice green 1945 Wheat...right as I was about to tell him about it he holds up a 1946 Rosie!!! He rescanned the Rosie hole and popped out another Wheat and obviously didn't need my help for anything! This got all three of us to focus on a corner of the backyard, but with two others detectors running along with overhead wires my Deus was not settling down...I tried everything but it was simply too chatty. I ended up walking a few steps away and concentrating on another corner...
Finally ended up circling back to the front yard - I remembered that the garbage cans were covering a couple square feet of the front yard, so I rolled them out of the way and was able to pull a dime and two modern pennies...no big deal but it all adds up! There is a dogwood tree in the front yard that gave up about 12 old coins last hunt ranging from wheats to buffalo nickels to a Merc. I had a feeling there had to be more there! Still in 12 khz and Reactivity 2 I started scanning right where I found a buffalo and three Wheats in the same hole last week, and a couple feet away came a pretty confident 5-6" nickel hit - out came a sharp 1935 Buffalo nickel! This got me excited and I was determined to find more...
There was this funny "bottlecap" signal only 3 feet away from the base of the tree, but I wasn't so sure about it. On a cross-scan, I got NOTHING. But in the "good" direction I would get 77, 94, 83, 95...just a bunch of numbers with a broken high tone. I remember scanning the EXACT SAME target last week and decided then to NOT dig it - but right after digging that Buffalo today I was feeling lucky. Dug down through some roots and got a good hit beyond 8" with the propointer. The ground was about perfect to dig with all the rain we've been having - and I FELT the coin before I laid eyes on it. It felt like a slick, almost plastic surface but once I got my finger on the rim I knew it was a quarter. Out of the hole I saw the reverse side first...and much to Dad's and Gerald's chagrin a very worn 1901 Barber quarter came to light! THIS IS TX = 1
Went on to find another Buffalo nickel at only 4" deep - not sure how we missed that one last time...Then I walked over close to where I found a Merc last week and got a pulltab signal, a "58" while still in 12 khz - and out comes a 1943 nickel. A foot away from that I get just a whisper of a high tone in one direction only, and had Gerald check it with his Tejon using the 5 X 8 coil. He could only get a hit in one direction while a cross-scan was silent, just like the Barber quarter. From 8" deep out came a nice 1937 Wheat!!! THIS IS TX = 1
So while reloading the software probably didn't solely allow me to hit those deeper coins today, I have been very interested in learning those DEEP 8-inch plus coin hits while using Reacitivty 2 and 12khz with hardly any notching. I have just the place where this could be put to the test - a vacant lot which used to have a c.1912 house present...a place where I've dug many 6-8" Wheats before....also the first place I took the reloaded v3.2 last October and found many smaller, deeper targets before. I'm interested in seeing what's still there - the ground is like butter at this place and it won't stay this way for long...looks like another night hunt is in the works!
