Unexpected test of ID EDGE

New member
Yesterday I tilled a garden space 6 ft. X 20 ft (special for tomatoes) and lost a metal pin and connector from the tiller. No big deal. I have a ID Edge and should find it quick like. Yes, guess what?? I went up and down the space several times and trying different setting. Found three pieces of wire ties and two piece of foil but no pin. After 20 minutes I said enough, it must not be here. On the way to the house I thought why not try my old (199:geek: detector. On my first pass through the area again another two pieces of ties, a small piece of wire cable and my pin and connector. From this I realize that I may have never given my Bounty Hunter Land Star enough credit for being a great detector.

when you went over the area with the edge, you simply just missed the spot where the pin was, plain and smple :) , and happened to hit it with the bounty hunter... lol:).. i seriously hope your not comparing the edge(or any fisher for that matter :) ) .. to a bounty hunter :)

Now don't knock the bounty hunter, that new T2 is one bad A$$ detector.
The time ranger is not bad and will keep up with some of the best tectors.

Where did you have the disc on both machines? Two possibilities. You didn't run the disc on the Edge low enough. Or the sensitivity to small objects isn't as good on the Edge due to frequency or whatever compared to the LandStar. I'd be curious to hear of a followup test with your machines on smaller objects. How big was the pin you were looking for? I definitely don't mean my post the wrong way as I've owned everything from Bounty Hunter's to Minelab's... :) I've had several machines that are higher price range that wouldn't even give a peep on smaller targets. I've also had machines that would hit a tack at 4 or 5 inches. Just curious more than anything.

I've been using a BH 3300 for awhile now, and I have to say it FINDS TONS. Problem is the ID is terribly inconsistent. Last week my wife dug down over 2 feet on a repeatable quarter signal...........to a nice 1/2" thick, 4" wide x 3 foot long piece of steel flat that wassitting in the ground at a slight angle.....

Hi Bill,

When I first got the Edge I was unsure of its ability to see the small stuff. This was a concern of mine because I do a lot of wading for jewelry. After using it for a while now I can say that it is pretty decent in that regard. Certainly not as deep or responsive as the high freq machines, but it strikes a good balance between the high conductive coins and sensitivity to small stuff. The good part is that it can sniff small low conductors out of iron with the best of 'em. Good performance in iron is what the Edge is all about for me. As you know I used the Coinstrike from the time it came out up until last year. The Edge has replaced it and frankly I don't feel I am giving up a thing for my type hunting. Where the C$ seemed a little "ragged" in some conditions the Edge just purrs right along. Some of the newer detectors need a tightly controlled sweep speed and demand smaller coils to be effective in iron, not so with the Edge.

You should try one to see if it can handle you ground, you might just like it.

Tom,

You know I wasn't putting down either machine in my post? Only trying offer some explantion to why he seen the results he did. You also know my taste in machines too well by recommending the Edge... :D There's nothing like a machine that handles iron well and can pick out targets close to iron. Has anyone reported the problems with hot rocks on the Edge that I had on the C$? If you recall the C$ was hitting hot rocks and IDing them in the 20's in my area. I could never figure out how to ID them from good hits or get rid of them. I recent bought a Teknetics T2. I can tell you it handles iron with the best of them. It's also good at picking out low conductors close to iron. It has some cons as any machine does but it fills the gap that I've been looking to fill in my arsenal. I also just bought an X-Terra 50 but only have a handful of hours on it. I am sure I'll try the Edge at some point. The wife would shoot me if I bought another machine at the moment. The T2 & 50 are both less than two months old. But, as you remember I have the nicest wife on the *planet*... :) I'll be reading the posts on the Edge. Thanks for the heads up.

with a rare +36 in an area that is carpeted with them. I have had one and one only that read a solid positive on the X-T 70, all the rest reading -8 on that detector. This is all in mild ground so I can't say how they will react where the background mineralization is stronger.

Gonna hit a couple sites with the Edge and X-T 70 today that should show up any strengths or weaknesses in target stability. If time allows I am also going to another site that was nearly unhuntable with the C$ due to high falses on the the "clinkers" that carpet the area. I'm hoping the low freq coil on the 70 will help with those, the Advantage handled them well.

Gotta have hobbies, but since a good wife is irreplaceable you best treat her like a "star".

Hi Tom: I have an Edge that I didn't have very good feelings at first. Now that I have hunted with it some I am impressed with what it will do. The test of the Edge and the Xterra 70 interest me very much as one of my hunting buddies hunts with a Xterra 50 and does quite well. I am thinking maybe in that direction. Jack

Bill,

I spent too much time at the abandoned lumber town to make it over to the trashy beach I spoke of. The results were the same as what I have been seeing all along. The X-T 70's stock coil is just to big/sensitive to work the iron. I went right to the worst spot there where every "high end" detector is nearly useless due to falsing on rusty tin, nails, clinkers and coal contamination. Both the Edge and 70 had to be run at about half sensitivity to be able to make some sense out of the noise. The Edge gave repeatable signals on non-ferrous targets mixed in the noise and false signals where the 70 was blinded by the amount of trash. One good thing tho, the low freg coil threw most of the iron falses I was getting with the stock coil up to +48. I had been hunting with the stock coil with 48 accepted and iron was falsing all over the positive numbers, when I switched to the LF coil +48 high tones took over and I simply notched em out for a quieter ride.

There is just something "better" about the Edges audio vs the C$. You can hunt the nasty stuff with perhaps a little too high sensitivity causing noise and end of swing falsing ect ect, yet still be able to discern the good sounds. Hard to explain but there is a difference between hits that will be repeatable non-ferrous stuff and the non-repeatable falses. If ya get the difference on good vs bad with the CZ's (and I'm sure you do  ) I thnk you will like the Edge.

Tom,

Thanks for the report. All of the Fisher's I ever used have been above average machines. Even the one I didn't do extremely well with I'd still rate well. I have been interest in the Edge since it came out and the reports started being posted. I've read alot of good reports about it in iron which the CZ series is typically only average in iron (IMHO). Interesting report to say the least since I have an X-Terra 50 and am always looking for something different to try. I think it's easy to tell good/bad signals on the CZs. So, I think I'd be set... :D Can you send me your address and phone number??? Because if the wife goes ballistic when I decide to get the machine I'll need a place to stay or someone to blame... :lmfao:

Bill,

I just supply the info, use at your own risk!

I can see the headlines now.. "Small Observatory springs up in local back yard... complete with doghouse"

The bad thing is... there IS an observatory in my backyard! :D :stars: I could open the roof on those warm nights. I'd have to move into it if I bought the Edge now. If I bought it now could you send me a money for a porta-potty since I would have spend every last penny I have on the Edge??? :nopity:

-Bill

:nopity: no Porta Potty needed just dig some deep iron hits and stick an outhouse over the hole.
I could send you all the corn cobs you want. Do you prefer Priority or UPS?
