Got off work a little early today and decided to go out geocaching up in the foothills, so then I decided to take the QDII and maybe if I'm lucky I might find a meteorite while I'm trekking through the desert. Nothing but trash on the way up so on the way back I got well off the trail, about a 100 yds later, the detector goes off, tried to pinpoint but it was long but narrow, so I stared scraping rock and dirt away and about 2 or 3 inches down, this is what I found!!!!

I can't find any markings or anything, don't know anything about them, but it sure is cool!!! Searched around for another half hour, but didn't find anything else.....That's OK, this is well worth it!

Not a marking on it anywhere, But like I said, still Cool!!!!

I'm assuming it's a scythe blade? Had a curved handle with some hand grip pegs, and was used to cut down grass (hay, grain) before power tools. Is that what it is anyone?

NO,a scythe is larger, more curved and sharpened on the inside. The tange is usually bent up at an angle.Looks to me to be a sward blade. What part of the country did you find it?East or West?

I hope it is a sword blade. That's much better than a scythe. Maybe someone on the relic forum can give you some info. Look it over very carefully for a manufacturer name or something. It may be hard to see.

Any markings will probably be on the flat area where the tang ends and the blade begins.Like modern knives and swords are marked.

Awesome find Joe.

That's a sword, and a great find.

Thanks for sharing,

wow, motojoe. incredible discovery. it looks to be an indian wars period officer's sword. there are inspector's cartouche marks near the tang somewhere, but they might be hard to see. i would have it checked out and appraised by an expert. great job, and hh,

Saber! Great find motojoe! Most likely a Cavalry model but there are a few Artillery Officer's models that are similar. You should find some markings (name or date) up at the hilt (where the blade ends and the hand guard would have started). Use only very light emery paper to light sand the area if you see stamping. Nice find, David@Dixie

Awesome, indeed!! That is a fabulous find! Congratulations on great detecting!:super:

motojoe, it occured to me after my last post that this was probably lost in the heat of battle, and the officer simply cast aside the hilt. Go back to where you found it and look around some more. You never know. It would be fantastic if you could restore the entire sword.
