Unexpected call and yesterdays dive. More GOLD!!

At about 1:45 yesterday afternoon I received a call at work from the Fox 2 reporter Jason Carr. He asked me if I could be in Southfield Mi at 3:30 to return a class ring on camera. I said sure. Its an hour drive and so I headed home and picked up my wetsuit. Since I was heading close to one of my favorite lakes I just couldn't pass it up!! So I told my boss I was leaving and headed to Detroit. An hour and a half later after the shoot and returning her ring and touring the inside of the newsroom and watching some live takes I was out the door heading to my favorite lake. Cass in Pontiac.

Very first find was the silver ring with a sun on it. Other finds include 4 wheat's from the 40's and 50's, a 1942S war nickle, a 1963 dime, and the silver cross and chain. They were seperated but in the same hole. The small buckle has a patent number of 1652. Very low.

The dive knife was a neat find. It has been in the water for a long time. Oh I almost forgot the item on the dive knife. Silly me!! It is a 14K ring with a long green stone in it. I have no idea what it is but I am hoping for an emerald. I will know as soon as my favorite store opens this morning. Water is clear and beautiful this time of year. No boats stirring it up. It is a clear lake anyway.

Mr. Carr will let me know when the story will air. Will keep anyone interested posted

It could be but I haven't tried to clean it yet. It still looks like an old dive knife to me!!

I just recieved an email from an editor in York Pensylvania. I was in their news on Sunday:

I was also in our local paper on the 13th of April. Full front page with pictures but they have removed them now:

I read the story, that was great. I want to be like you someday..... Actually, I am headed back to Florida at the end of the year and plan to get back into diving. I am sure there are a couple places in Florida I can check out.

Subadetector - question, do you look for certain areas of the lake or do you just head out?

There are certain areas of lakes that I hunt nore than others. Where I get MOST of my things are on dropoffs and just over the 5' deep areas of old and new public beaches. I especially love the old ones. Anywhere from 5 - 25' deep bring me a lot of targets and some GREAT finds. Im Michigan a lot of the lakes have sandbars also. A lot of detectorists hit the shallow areas BUT I seem to be one of the only ones in hte 5 - 25' area where somebody has swam over their head.

I hope this helps anybody. Lots of things out there. My antique fishing lure collection is great and some of my favorite finds. You never know what a person lost in swimming over their head and in the old days there were NO swim bouys to stop you from exploring.

Good luck to all.

Do you tend to hold your breath while listening for signals.I know some guys that can
really stretch a tank while listening to signals, especially in the shallows. HH Joe

Yes I hold my breath. I can get 3 hours + some out of an aluminum 80 tank. In that shallow of water there is no problem at all. I just don't go up and down holding my breath.

Maybe you can do a David Blaine and hold your breath for 16 mins, bet you could get 4 hours + then.

Wow! you got me wanting to dive now! I just found out the corp of engineers are banning metal detecting at our local parks.I guess it's time to head offshore!

Ordered up my Anderson SCUBA shaft for my Excal.... Think its time to really get wet and put some more gold in my chest.... What are you using for your recovery method??? Short handled scoop or fanning???
Regards,
Keith

I take as little as possible down with me. I always fan the sand. Muck is a different story though. I carry a small mesh bag with a clip on it and a drawstring. My dive shop has them for 6.00. Probably cheaper online!! Anyway I wave the handful of muck in front of my scoop. When I have the target, I put it in the bag, hold the top closed and swish the bag through the water until only the target and some stones are left. I then put the target in my BC.

Divers, I don't bother to look at my finds. I use all the air I have to find things. When I get out I put all my finds in a plastic bucket. All the sinkers, pull tabs, lures, bullets, anything that I have found. Then I take out the coins and rings and put them in another small bag and go down again if possible. You get a lot more finds if you just concentrate on getting them in your pouch and not what you have!!

I have 2 dive knifes with me. Some lakes the item is down in the clay and others it is just in the sand or on top of the clay. I use a knife to dig if I neeed to but it is rare. Hope this helps anybody.

I also carry a large mesh bag to pick up any old bottles that I find. If your detecting in the muck and your detector hits a bottle it makes a distinctive sound. I have picked up some very nice old milk bottles and pop bottles this way. You never know what your going to come across. I do get a lot of boat anchors also. They sell for 10.00 - 25.00 each at garage sales.

Thats pretty good bottom time out of an 80. Skipbreathing we call it here, in calm shallow water you seem to be down forever. The cold gets to me when I'm not moving much.
What weight are you Scubadetector and what thickness of suit do you wear?
Big blokes seem to last longer in the water cause of their greater body mass.
I'm 6' 1" and 230 pounds and at the moment am wearing 9mm jacket and longjohns yet still cold after 7 hrs on snorkel on Sunday and we have'nt even hit winter yet!
Might have to try the drysuit again. I hate that thing though.
Keep up the good work. Its great to hear of the experiences of one who knows what their doing.
Cheers Lou.

Ok. 210lbs 6' tall, 5mm super-stretch Aqualung wetsuit with a 5mm hood and 5mm booties. 24lbs of lead keep me on the bottom. Water is still COLD!!! But only when it gets down my back!! My hands are fine. Yes we call it skip-breathing here also. I didn't use that term because I thought I would have to explain it.

Here is my setup. I hip-mount my CZ-21. Only way to go as far as I am concerned

Ring cleaned up nicely. Just growth and sand on it.
