this thing is totally wiped as you can see. The reeded edge is the giveaway.
it’s very close to a quarter in diameter but only about 1/3 as thick. My hunting partner believes it’s a Spanish bit. For the location, it could be Spanish, French, or British. Any ideas? There really is nothing to go on.

Splintered "piece of eight"?? Darker mark in its center appears to resemble a symbol..."right arm/side of a cross"???? Also, upper left of same side looks kind of like the number zero next to an "ampersand" symbol??? "Reeded" edge is a problem if Spanish silver. It's a true mystery.

Come on guys!!!! like Jeff said its a Hammered! no doubt! LOL

Here are some internet pics...note absence of these Spanish coin's normal "round" shape. Also note "bottom right" coin with somewhat similar "0" and "ɛ" shapes on its left?? I noted same likeness on your 2nd image as described in post above. Probably a huge stretch and your find may just be a piece of silver jewelry/token that someone placed on a RR track by some kids for "Let's see what happens" curiosity??? At any rate, good luck.

<--- "0" and "ɛ" shapes? PS - I'm not any good at copying/posting images...as you can see.

A reeded edge would be a minted or milled coin so it’s not a cob. Or a true hammered coin. Does anyone know of a French or British coin like this? They spent more time here in Mobile than the Spanish really.
