Underwater salt hunt with PI without discrimination

sdesic

New member
I am building underwater PI metal detector (without discrimination).
Is it hard to detect with no disc ?
Too many targets ?

Also one question on detecting underwater on gravel ...
gravel can be problem ... small and large (10 cm) rocks...

Man I don't know ? Sounds like your trying to build a tool for a hobby you haven't tried very much. Am I right?

Its obviously going to depend on WHERE you intend to hunt with it or how far out as to plan on going. With out disc if there is any metal there.... even tiny iron.... its going to pick it up. So yes you will have to dig everything..... beep and dig. Digging in gravel is WORK even with a scoop designed for it. Targets may not be as deep thou..... down side to that a concentration of targets where a disc machine would really pay off.

Dew

I have not been there yet (metal detecting underwater).
Plan is to detect underwater - up to 1,5m deep, not scuba dive.
I have done detecting on gravel beach and salt lake gravel after water was drained.

Need to look into that more then, what kind of soil, how much targets ... how much trash
It is not very expensive to make one to try.

Gravel/rocks can be good as they trap objects.

How deep will your PI unit pick up a quarter? I have an Excal with modified (larger) coil, however I am interested in getting a PI machine.

Surfline

Dew knows his stuff for sure. I have used a PI about three years now. Each year the trash count has gone down, but that may be just my beach at this time. Making a waterproof detector is not easy and hunting beyond a meter very challenging as well. Good luck to you!

Detector is from Geotech site, surf pi pro ... based on White's
DIY project... not for general use so ... not very beautiful :)
finds 1 Euro coin in air on 22 cm ... 20-23 cm coil

I have used them on land my first year of detecting ... digging all is bad but you must learn

hey! how was your hunt with PI underwater? and what detector do you use now?
I'm just buying a drysuit and i will do detecting in water, also want to build baracuda pi. i have a deus but i'm afraid that water will damage my coil/remote. i'm thinking is hard to detect when diving with pi because time underwater is limited, at least is good for beach hunting and 1meter deep water or so...

I decided to buy VLF and then BBS... but I am digging everything most of the time
1280-X and Excalibur II

It depends entirely on how much iron trash there is in that area. Running your Excalibur in all metal will tell you how much is there. Digging at 1.5 meters is not bad except that it becomes hard to push the scoop in because you float and cannot get as much weight into the dig. Some guys wear dive weights to overcome this, I just bounce on the scoop till it goes in.

what have so special minelab excalibur for water hunt? (without the fact is underwater md and the plus of discrim). depth comparing to homemade PI?
fresh water hunts you can do with any vlf detector (waterproof) having good result?
nice channels you have guys!
