Understanding

A couple of questions, at least. I'm having a struggle understanding this machine, Wow.
1) First, if I'm using the set Coin Mode with with no adjustments to discrimination, am I nulling out or missing any jewellery? I read this mode is based on hundreds of various coins, just wondering about gold.

2) Next, the 10 E-Trac pre programmed dicsrimination patterns? Let's say I X out pull tabs, and screw caps, I'm going to miss alot of gold, no?

3) Third, the first screen The Pattern Screen, I'm still not sure where I should be looking for a good "cross hair" The manual says up towards the top of the screen, left and right?

Just a few of my questions. I'm having fun with the machine, had a ton of experience with the DFX, but really don't feel like a have a clue what this machine is telling me other then I go with the audio sound and the depth. I like to dig alot of targets, so I'm not as worried about discriminating out things, just don't want to miss valuable stuff. Desmond in Buffalo

I'll try and keep it short, but don't think I'm just shrugging off your questions.

1. Maybe - the reason is jewelry will hit all over the board. You probably won't be missing any silver or copper jewelry, but just like any detector the gold can hit zinc penny range on down to foil range. Same way with the E-Trac. You're gonna have to dig the junk looking for gold....but it will find it.

2. Most likely - see #1

3. As you get used to the machine, you'll rely less and less on the screen. I Very Very Seldom look at the cross hairs. I will most often look at the CO number and the depth if I look at the screen at all.

If you haven't done so, put in a test garden with various coins and other items you want to find at 6-8 inches and some clad at 2 inches and play with the machine. Swing fast, swing slow, practice pinpointing. All these things will help your confidence greatly. Above all else don't worry about the numbers and crosshairs. Learn to pinpoint and DIG all kinds of targets to start with.

This is the best way to learn in my opinion.

This forum is a great place to learn about your machine. A lot of experience here. They've helped me tremendously.

Thanks. What I'm saying though, is the coin mode too restrictive a discrimination, or low tones will sound, I just have to dig them? Des in Buffalo

Here is Virginia (red clay), silver coins will bounce all over the place on the FE scale, therefore, I will open Quick Mask and discriminate everything from FE 27 down and use that as my pattern to hunt for coins. The CO numbers tend to bounce less, so they will normally hit where they are supposed to. So, by discriminating FE 27 down, I am eliminating most of the junk (iron), but still getting the possible silver, gold, etc., signals. When you get a signal that is repeatable from different angles on the CO scale in the coin and/or gold range, dig it. You will be digging some trash, but you will not miss any good targets.

I think the coins pattern would be fine. I'd sure open up the BIG Silver area (01-40 through 01-46) if you haven't done so. I think the more you hunt the more your gonna open up the screen. I hardly ever used factory patterns or modes.

The only two pattern I use are Andy Sabisch's pattern and a modified Relic pattern for use with Ferrous tones.

Thanks so much. What is best way to learn how to open up your screen? Read the manual but still don't know how. Confused. Des

read the Andy Sabisch book if you have it, I am just in Niagara county if you are in Buffalo NY I can lend it to you. I can also get together with you and show you how to program the open screen quick mask.took me a few weeks but now I can switch my programs as I'm MDing to suit my needs. I switch from coin program with multitone conduct to TTF with a few presses of the buttons. speeds up my good target recovery time.

Anytime you descrim out any foil to in penny range to will lose gold.... sad but true. You have to dig it all.
