Understanding these Signals

New member
I need some help understanding these what I call confusing signals. Pretty consistently I will get readings from 30's to mid 70's, and a ding or 2 of 80-81. Eveytime it will turn out to be trash, either a pull tab or a soda can. I have tried multiple settings, but the results tend to be the same. I was wondering if I am doing something wrong. With about 12 hours of hunting, 31 cents of modern coins, broken horseshoe, childs toy from the 70's and a slew of bottle caps, pull tabs, and aluminum cans, it feels like I am doing something wrong.

The A T tones and target i d tell when it is a coin as good or better then any detector I have ever owned. I only hunt in the pro zero mode and usually with 8 sen. In heavy trash I may on occasion drop down a bar or two......but for me, seldom. In pro mode a coin will give that nice sweet high tone and the t i d will lock on really good. With a good pin point the t i d numbers may move 1 or 2 numbers one way or the other, but that's about it. If the coin is on edge, they might bounce a bit more, but the tone will still be that nice sounding high tone, just a little smaller feel.

I would suggest finding a clean spot of ground and laying a few various coins out on the ground and a ways away, some of the typical trash items we find, such as bottle caps, rings with the tab tales still attached, just the tab tale and a few pieces of various size can slaw and see how all these items read and sound. Get the basic's down what good and bad targets read and sound like. If one is new to a detector, it is good to dig a lot of different sounding targets. In short order, you should get a feel for what a bottle caps sounds like, often a screamer, has a big feel to it and the tone usually breaks up some on the edge as you swing over it.. As one example. There is more, of course, but the key with a new detector is getting the tone(s) down. Good luck. HH jim tn

As Jim mentioned, those signals with a high tone, in the 80's that lock on really well, especially in all 4 directions are usually a coin or perhaps a silver ring. Pull tabs bang hard, usually at about 53 and sometimes with a double beep. Bottle caps can be a challenge, as they can sound like a coin. But, keep digging signals at this point of your learning curve so you really get to learn your metal detector. Looking forward to seeing some of your finds......
