If you read this article about halfway down you see this stand alone sentence: "The mine would be directly above Iliamna Lake, the largest producer of sockeye salmon in the world." So my question is where exactly is the gold and do we need an air scoop with a detector that has great air tests?

It is the second largest freshwater lake wholly within the United States covering approximately 1,022 square miles. I have been there, camped in a remote cabin and fished it in late fall when the Rainbows fatten up for winter. The famed Iliamna Monster(s) lives in the lake and is reputed to be 30 feet in length. Spotted on numerous occasions by bush pilots claiming the monster was as long as their plans landing floats Native lure abounds with tales of the monster (believed to be a large fish). I'm sure mining can be done on a scale and in a way that both lake safty and mining operations can be achieved, Very large fines have a way of making people act responsibly.
