Un-filled in holes

Hey guys I have seen from time to time that people post here saying how some jerks dug objects but didn't fill in hole when they were done. I thought to myself that is crazy how could any one be so lazy. Untill two days ago I was digging a yard that was foreclosed on and was given permission from bank to detect, anyhow a land scaping out fit came to mow yard. I had already did the front yard and was on the side and watched that big commercial mower suck five inch plugs out of the ground. I had dug prob fifteen holes and four were sucked out. It literally sucked plug out and laid it a little chewed up next to the hole. It looked as if I didn't fill hole and left plug laying. Has this ever happened to you fellas? I have tried to cut half plug and lift it like a hinge but it never works right for me. I need to be better at pin pointing for that I guess. Thanks guys

No it hasn't happened to me but then again i've been digging plugs for the last few decades.

I've posted on other forums here that a shallow plug will likely be pulled out by the vacuum created by hi-powered industrial mowers.
The deeper the plug, the moister the soil the less likely it'll be pulled out by a mower and the more likely it won't dry up.
Here's my plug digging routine which sometimes lasts longer than the actual digging and retrieval of the target.

I don't leave a plug above grade level.
It can be spotted a mile away and will likely dry up. I like to leave a plug at or preferably slightly below grade to let rain water puddle up in it increasing the odds against dry up.
If it takes extreme stomping on that plug to try and get it level, odds are its gonna dry up and/or be sucked up. If need be with excess soil, grind up any clumps of dirt and fling it into the wind to get the plug level. If done right, i guarantee that flung soil won't be noticed but a plug sticking up a couple inches above grade will be noticed.

I don't cut a plug at an angle, i always cut straight down perpendicular to the earth.
Cutting a plug at an angle will guarantee the out edges will dry up and if the angle is extreme enough, the mower's vacuum will lift those shallow edges up starting the process of pulling the whole plug out.

I always save a handful or two of soil to fill in any voids or crevices around the circumference of the plug to further ensure the edges won't dry up. Don't leave a plug looking like an earthquake happened around it.

For shallow coins that can be detected by a hand held pinpointer, i always use a screwdriver.
For the more deeper shallow targets say a few inches, cut only a slightly circular slit and pry up. Slits don't get sucked up! LOL!

i have come back to a site where I had detected the day before and an animal had lifted up several of my plugs. I think it might be skunks digging for grubs and worms. they smell them easier I guess, I don't know. but animals will do that.

anyhow the advice above is good, cut a nice deep sharp edged plug if you can.

I agree...If the target is 1-2" use a blade/screwdriver to pop it out...If 3-4 inches, cut a horseshoe flap...If deeper than 4" cut a full 10-12" deep plug (depth of a LESCHE)...It takes practice...If you have an experienced hunter to follow, watch how they do it...I have gotten so good at this, that sometimes I can't find my holes if I need to go back to check them, and when I return the following week or even days after sometimes, I cannot find my holes. This is how I like it... :)
I have started using the LESCHE shovel to dig my holes...Even in parks...I can dig a pretty neat 3 sided plug with it now.
