uMax question

bluesky

New member
I just got my new silver uMax and am a beginner. I live on the Oregon Coast. I researched my choice on here and I thank everyone for my choice.
After digging in the sand it really spoils you, it's so much more easy to dig then the dirt. The uMax has done well in the dry ocean sand but I need some more advice on working with it in the wet ocean sand. I understand it's not a water or wet sand machine, but this is what I have now...so i need to adjust to the wet sand as well as I can with it. Are there any others using the uMax in wet ocean sand?

Hi Bluesky

The majority of motion detectors can alas not cope with wet salty sand. The solutions exist, but they're no good at all : screw UP the disc (to foil at least) and screw DOWN the sens (about half way).

Doing this, your detector will be less chatty on wet sand, bus you'll lose some tiny gold rings and depth.

I took a Cortes to the Waldport area once and tried using it in the wet sand. It falsed a lot, so I turned the sensetivity down. It helped a little but it still falsed. I'm guessing the black sand pockets were a little much for it. You might experience the same too. Not much to do about it, except maybe try a DD coil. That may or may not help.

DD coil does not SEE so much ground mineralization, as I've heard....
