Ultrasonic Coin Cleaning

Do these "ultrasonic Cleaners' really work? I am looking at purchasing one, or is there a better way?
Cheers
Peter

Peter, ultrasonic cleaners work great in some areas and poorly in others. First of all, make sure it is an "ultra sonic" machine, not a sonic machine, as they each work entirely different.
Where They Perform Poorly......
-Cleaning batches of clad
-Cleaning copper coins
-cleaning non-metalic objects
-Will crack certain stones in rings
They Really Do Well.....
-Cleaning silver coins, rings, jewellry
-Cleaning the rust off metalic objects
-Removing dried dirt/mud from an object instead of
rubbing it off
That said, if you find lots of silver coins, rings, jewellry, relics etc. and put a lot of emphasis on preserving them, an ultrasonic machine would be a wecome addition to your equipment. If preserving your finds isn't really that important, you don't need one. Several other wethods of preserving/cleaning your finds will work just fine. If you do buy an ultra-sonic machine, don't buy a real small one, as some lrelics just don't fit in them.
Hope this helps. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

From my experience they seem to excell with jewelry both silver and gold, but have to agree with Bob a good tumbler with a proper mixture for the coins tumbled is the better way to go...
