:ukflag: So much field, so little time ....

Here I am detecting on a very long L shaped field of about 25 to 30 acres. This is where I found my Roman denari silver coin, where Mo found an intact Roman fibula broach, and where all of us found some bronze Roman coins.

Here is the same field from about 1/3 of the way from the road to the top of the field. At the fields flat top, it bends in an L shape to the right. All our better finds were in this slope.

With a field so large, sometimes a person needs to take a few minutes off for a strategy session. I stratagize best with my eyes closed. Keith caught me on this photo.

... 1. They are comfortable, 2. They can be easily be put on and removed and the beginning and end of the day, 3. The high top Wellies keep pieces of stubble and other field debris from entering causing walking to be uncomfortable, 4. Some fields have wet areas, muddy areas, and dry areas so Wellies keep your feet more dry. 5. ALL the farmers wear Wellies, so to fit in, us Yanks wear them too.

It was cold to me, being used to 90 degree temps .... was generally in the low 60's in the mornings and as high as the mid 70's in the afternoon. I wear a jacket and gloves when it's colder than about 65 degrees. That day I was wearing a T-shirt, a flannel shirt, and a columbia vented fishing / detecting shirt. I had my jacket on earlier that day.

.... the stubble isn't too bad if it's been cut a week or so. Old stubble can be more easily bent by the coil swinging through it.

A fresh cut field, especially Rape Seed stubble is cut about 6 to 8", and is as big around as your little finger and seems to be as strong as a young sapling. It makes for tough detecting. No telling how many hundreds of targets we missed that were beyond the reach of our signals when we could not effectively beat down the stubble. Fortunately, good British ale or lager provides a boost of energy and improves one's attitude for working hard the next day.
