Julian, Nice finds. Glad you got some silver, hope you find some 14th century coins. Here in the U.S. our oldest is 1700's coins, mostly in the eastern part of the country. HH, Jabbo

Nice bunch of finds, Julian. Thanks for the photos. I found a shilling like that one here in Idaho about 4 or 5 weeks ago. I'm not very familiar with the British monetary system, so what relation does the shilling have to a half crown? Is a half crown half a pound? And I've never heard of a Florin. What is that?

Hi Mason

Glad you liked the pics,Here is some info that will explain from the net..
4 farthings to a penny.
2 farthings to a halfpenny. ( haepney)
2 haepneys to a penny .
3 pennies = thruppence. 4 thrupenny bits= 1 shilling.
6 pennies = sixpence. 2 "tanners" = 1 shilling.
12 pennies = one shilling.
20 shillings = one pound. ( 12pennies x 20shillings=240 pennies in a pound.

Also, a two bob bit , ( or florin , posh , eh , ) was a two shilling coin . A half-crown coin was worth two shillings and sixpence. Therefor, 5 two bob bits made 10 shillings, (half of a pound ) , and 4 half-crowns also made 10 shillings, (half of a pound .) The only notes in general use were a ten bob note, (half a quid), one pound note, five pound note, and you might even see a TENNER , ten pounds

Hope this explains it better Before decimalization on 15 February 1971, there were twenty (20) shillings per pound.

Wow, complicated and confusing system. I wouldn't know if I was rich or poor. Might be why so many Brits crossed the Atlantic during the 1700's.
