UK meter numbers and how to calibrate Please

Piero franchi

New member
HI, As heading sugests, I want to know how to calibrate a meter sor the Sov GT.
It says I should turn the rear knob to half way, then fix it to a even number on a type of coin.

That bit gets me!!!!!!!!!

What coin????

I am in the uk, and it gives to US examples!!!!!!!

Also any one got a number chart for the UK

Many thanks
Piero

With the GT meter which should be the new style 180 meter the highest number you should see is a 180 on any metal target. This is what this control on the back of the meter is for, you take your copper or silver coin and move it back and forth in front of the coil while in disc and get the highest steady reading on the meter and turn the control until you get a 180, now it is calibrated. It is a reference point you use for IDing as you know now your silver and copper will read 179-180 and you can try other targets and see what they will read on the 180 meter. Now if you should see the meter read 182 or more you know it is out of calibration, all iron will read with a minus number which can be much higher numbers, but a minus number..

Sorry to not be getting this, but surly the size and thickness of the coin I use is going to make a differance?????

I have not even fitted it yet, let alone played about with it, maybe I will see what you mean.

But if I calibrate it to a small copper coin, so I get 180, wont a bigger copper coin make it go higher.

Am I missing some thing.

One last thing, the manuel say, to just get it to be an even number, thats all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the Sovereign for us over here in the USA a copper penny, clad and all silver including the big silver dollar all read the same on the Sovereigns. This also includes our alum beer and soda cans too, this is the highest the tones will get and the meter will read. This is why we calibrate to the 180 as it is the reference point Sun Ray used for their meters as being the highest reading we will see. Now for us the older Indian head pennies and the new zinc pennies made after 1982 will read 176-177 so we know it is not copper or silver. The nickles for most will read 144-145, but some of the trash pull tabs will read 140-142 and sound close to a nickle. Some of the bigger pull tabs will read 148-170 so us that coin hunt may just walk over these signals, but those looking for gold rings may want to dig these.
If you are going to use a meter I would find your biggest coper or silver coin and set it for 180 and then check the other coins you have and see what they will read on your meter. You will have to remember these or right them down for further reference. With so many different coins and what they are made up of may make the meter not much use for you if hunting some very old places where very old coins and relics can be found as you just have to dig all.
