I went to the laundry down the street from the coin shop and while my clothes were spinning around I went over to get some 2x2s and talk coins with the owner. He had a good idea for what to do with my $50 bill and pictured is what I bought. Below melt, I might add. The $50 will not appear in my MD accounting nor will I be mailing it to any smartasses so the official answer my query is............NOT a find. Just some more lovely silver for the pile.

Hard to see but one of the SLQs has a date. 1929. The owner of the shop sometimes gives repeat customers worn silver coins for change. My total cost was $54.13, he always charges tax. He gave me the SLQs and a new state quarter for change. I asked he he would consider a nice mercury dime and a few IH cents for the other 12 cents and he told me I was pushing my luck.

Rain until Sunday. I need the rest anyway.

Silver Coin Melt Value Calculation

Quantity: 9
Coin Type: 1948-1963 Franklin Half Dollar
Silver Price: $17.73 / troy ounce

Answer:

Total silver value is $57.72.

Statistics:

The owner and I are friends or at very least good aquaintances. He paid $31.50 for them about half an hour before I saw him. He held them for 30 minutes and made almost 20 bucks in the process. I was happy, he was happy, the guy who sold them probably went out and bought crack. The guy sold more than the 9 I bought but my great deal was only for $50 worth of silver. Had I asked for all of them he told me they would be $6.22 each. I paid $5.55.

I often talk to the owner about how he deals with the possibility of stolen goods etc. He fingerprints everybody who sells, documents every transaction, and only pays by check. In the 5 or 6 years I've know him I've never seen him do anything under the table.

Make friends with your local coin guy!
