Need help with any guesses on the identification of this rolled/stamped brass piece recovered from a Union camp in Virginia. I've posted it before and received some ideas, but I thought I'd post again. Thanks!! It's approx 6 in x 2 in and has 3 "star burst" impressions on it.
 
a shoulder scale or epaulet from some sort of dress uniform, but what do I know??
 
Newbie here,looks to me like it originally wrapped around something rectanglar and was staked in-place with the decorative"sunburst".Something on the order of a ferrule or the metal ends used on webstraps or harness top cap a"raw end",or on a wooden piece to cap the open end grain.
