Type A detector advice...Gotta be fast/deep

And of course its gotta find stuff in hunted out parks...

Ok back to reality. I bought a BH 505 & was Ok with it...Till I tried a Tesoro. I could take the BH out for a spin trying to use the tone ID etc...But compared to the Silver its a slug on target ID/ recovery speed. Also the seperation is far superior...

So I sold the BH & found a Troy X2 wich is very similar to the Silvers hunting style & also made by Tesoro.

The Troy has decent depth as far as Tesoro's go...But I could really use 3-4 more inches if possible. I hear Minelab & some others will go there but am I going to get along with it as far as hunting style.

I could change that but I doubt its goning to happen. I will dedicate time to a known good area but when I'm searching I got a lot of ground to cover. So having a quick response is what I prefer.

Figured I'd ask Vs the buy & try plan wich I definitely can not afford.

Just my opinion, but you're on the right track with a Tesoro. I've been through about 10 different detectors (Whites, Fisher, Garrett, Minelab, and Tesoro) and now I'm back to Tesoro and using a Tejon. I have an X-terra 70 for coinhunting, but the Tejon is my main relic hunting machine because its fast and deep. If you're gonna go for a Tesoro make sure you get one in good shape and then stick with it and learn it. If you have bad ground you might consider something like the Minelab Advantage or Sovereign. Personally, I'm down on TID for relic hunting. If you're hunting in an area where there is no doubt there's stuff to find you will need to dig most of your targets to get the deep keepers. But, if you're coinshooting in a park and need TID then probably the best is the Etrac, but I for one, cannot afford that machine and the X-terra gets decent depth for coinshooting. The Tejon is not bad for coinshooting with the dual discriminator, but you have to spend time learning its language.

Using both ID and beep and dig machines I agree with the Tejon choice. I've found thumbing the discrimination to be nearly as good for me as relying on a display. That said, I can see where the two stage discrimination available on the Tejon would be quicker and handier than thumbing and you'd still have good depth and the Tesoro quick retune, pinpointing etc.

Just spent the day detecting in some areas here digging past 3" would take a minor excavation effort. Hard soil with lots of rocks. So lack of depth was no issue today. We have tons of rock & most of them are "hot". As such both my Tesoro's have external GB modifications.

But with a manicured/mowed old park around here I'm finding clad past 4" thats only 3-4 years old. An inch a year sink?. I guess with a lot of mowing & heavy rain in the winter things get deep. In those parks the only old stuff I have found is held up on a root or dug up by a gopher. Both cases artificially higher than the rest of the coins lost at the same time.

So it's deeper I guess...

I do like the Tesoro's "style" so to speak. Just wish I could rent a high end unit for a test drive to see if I really would like/need it.

My local dealer has Whites but frankly the better units are clunkers-I forgot to mention my right tendon has been repaired so I gotts be weight concious.

Thanks for the replies...

to consider that would be a " biggie" I would think. That would be the Warrantee, repair, tuneups and other perks that you get with some machines and not with others. Tesoro has held this top position since they came about and if you snoop around a bit more you will discover this is pretty well known.Word is also about that some detector folks are having problems furnishing piecy parts for their repair work, so you need to snoop that out too before you get that next machine.
