:twodetecting:If you could only have 1 coil, what would it be?

Would you stay with the 11" pro coil or upgrade? I know the coils can be site specific but if you could pick just one to do it all well.. what would it be and why?

For me? 6x8 SEF. Mid-sized coil lets you still go fairly deep, but also allows you some ability to work in trash. Small, medium, and large; each coil has their purpose -- but, with time, for the sites I hunt, I find myself using the 6x8 most often. Larger sites with less trash, sites where I know stuff is DEEP, and new sites where I'm trying to quickly narrow down where the "hot spots" might be, are places I favor the larger coil; meanwhile, spots I have hunted before and have learned that at least portions are just FILLED with trash, are ones that eventually I know I will want to hit with the small coil -- to pull out a few more hidden/masked goodies. However, that 6x8 seems to be a good middle-ground compromise, and works well in many types of sites.

I would look at it as if I can only purchase one extra coil what would it be. That would be a smaller coil for Trashed parks, and such places.

Im with sgoss66 +1 for the 8x6 sef.

Here in drought coutry in hard horrible ground conditions, it is a dream come true. The stability and the fact that I can just about max all settings on it. In fact in my test dirt (I would say garden, but everythings dead) it can run maxed on setting and find everything my pro coil hits on and better. The seperation of this coil is almost unmatched, and for the old timers the balance seems like it is meant to be a factory explorer item. To be honest I regret not buying the darn thing when it first came out.

Thanks,

Tom

I specifically try to find complete null areas with pro coil just so I can pop on the 8x6 to pull the keepers out.

I am kind of partial to my Sunray X-8 at the moment. Can still go deep and works well in tough-to-hunt brushy areas too. Which is what the majority of my hunts consist of. Tempted to try an SEF 8X6 to see if it is any better. I love the 10X12 SEF but it's a tad on the heavy side. 11" Pro Coil is a killer but a bit chattery for lack of a better word.

Dave --

SunRay coils are supposed to be REALLY good; I am currently acquiring an X-5 from a friend. I am not sure the 6x8 would be a "better" coil; would be interested to see what you think if you get one. In any case, I would think the two (the X-8 and the 6x8 SEF) would give similar benefits -- better in trash than the 11", and maybe a good "happy medium" for many types of hunting situations. If you do try a 6x8, I'd like to hear your impressions of it, compared to your X-8.

I am leaning towards the SEF 8x6 but I wasn't sure if it was small enough to really seperate the trash. Does it seem to lock onto targets a little better than the pro coil? Just seems like it is so jumpy on the deeper targets or in higher trash areas. I would like to be able to put on a different coil and not feel like I am giving up depth or seperation. Thanks for the answers guys!! Hope everyone is getting in some dig time :detecting:

It would be nice to try an X-5. I am always looking out for one to come-up for sale used. Not a common coil to find for sale I am told.

Steve if I ever get my hands on an 8X6 I will certainly let you know what I think ..

[size=large]i went with the 8x6 sef only cause the sunray x-8 cost so much more and based on bryce's remarks there's not enough differance to justify the extra cost of the sunray. really like the 8x6 so far.

I love the x-8 and use it 80% of the time. In my ground it is almost as deep as the pro coil and better seperation. I treid the sef 6x8 and in my ground the x-8 was deeper and it is also a lighter coil.

I would have a hard time handing over $200 for any searchcoil, not too mention the wrath of my wife ..lol ... I was fortunate enough to find a nice used X-8 for $90 ..

My wife was actually going to get me the SEF 8x6 for Christmas but KelleyCo called her and said they didn't have anymore and was waiting on some more from Bulgaria or something so I ended up getting a new playstation game..major bummer

Yes .. KellyCo is'nt the center of the universe. There are many, many other dealers on here and elsewhere who would have had it on hand for sure.

LOL..Yea you and I know that but the wife saw me point it out to her on KelleyCo so she tried to get me one..Can't fault her, she tried to do something nice..I will pick me one up in the near future if I don't find something else first..

If I could only have one, I'm not sure what it would be but it would be a medium to small coil. Right now I am using the Minelab FBS 800 which is a medium/small coil and I like it pretty good but I have no smaller coil to compare it to,,, no yet anyway. I have ordered a Sunray X-5 so soon (if the ground doesn't freeze) I will have something to compare the 800 to.

I think my pick would have to be the Sun Ray Stealth X-8 (eight inch). I use it all of the time. Here are some of the factors that keep it on the end. It goes deep, is light weight, it separates good in high trash areas and it does not have much trouble with EMI.

But, If I could never have another coil to use, I would probably choose the old standard 10.5" ML coil. It would get heavy, but it separates fairly good and gets that additional depth, good with EMI too. I like the Pro Coil but EMI seems to be a bigger factor with it, requiring less sensitivity.

GM,
Don't forget that the smaller coil can actually get deeper in high trash than the std. (larger) coil. So the depth thing is not really a constant factor.

I tried the Pro coil and dug a lot of iron with it. Maybe I didn't give it a chance and just sold it off to someone else too early. I have been using the 10.5 ML for my deep coil, run my sensitivity high and listen for that repeatable sound, Dig very little iron with it. I feel certain that other people prefer the Pro coil for their own reasons too. I also like the 6" Excelerator, and It's deep, because you can bump up the sensitivity. I have no experience with the 5.5 Sunray, but a bunch of people like it. Thanks!
