I run a basic discrimination pattern with 28-35 blacked out on my Etrac.
First time ever.
I came across a short but some what lengthy high tone that sounded worse the more I hovered over the target.
Switching to an open quick mask changed iffy high tone to a great sound (expected) but the ID numbers were 35-46 (which is always a nail) on the quarter and 35-42 on the dime. But as I began to rotate around the target the feo numbers started to bounce in the 14-18 range, good I thought. Switched back to the discrimination pattern and the audio was better, but a long way from text book sounds. As I continued to rotate the target went back to the original feo numbers. Played around for a good while before deciding to dig. Both these targets were over 6" deep.
Both of these silver coins were in a hole with a small nail about 3" long. Both have a very good high tone from only one direction. Now here is the lesson, whenever you get a high tone that has any length to it, stop and rotate around the target, if the audio improves with rotation change to an open screen and observe what the feo numbers are doing. I'll bet you will increase your silver finds.

Hi Markg, I run a discrimination pattern very similar to yours, ferrous 28-35 blacked out, everything else pretty much open. Was your good ferrous numbers coming in at only one direction? I've found that the good ferrous numbers in only one direction is usually a nail, but I will dig if the audio sounds real good, you just never know. Good job on the merc and washington, HH Mike.

Very good lesson Mark! You are absolutely correct and I say that because I too have done the same thing several times. I used to be a firm believer in the idea that if you see the high ferrous number it junk.

Not true all all, like you said, circle the target and try to pick out a sweet spot because if you don't you may just be passing up a good one!!

Yeah, tell you what, Im very guilty a lot of times and walking away from that scenario,,,just get lazy, if it doesnt look or sound good when I switch to quick mask.
I have been using a pattern another guy posted on Toms forum (he uses TTF with it) but I have been using Muliti Conductive. It has a bit more disc that what you guys use, but it isnt bad.
I have to have some disc, my patience wears fast and some days worse than fast, lol.
HH,
John

this doesn't always work. Because a lot of times the tip of a nail will give a solid one way signal of like 12-45
I have dug tons of these one way signals and more times that i like to admit it is a nail. BUT about 1 in 30 times it is a coin with a nail very close, or even covering it.

Nice finds

Nice silver recovery.

I have probably left some silver like this when hunting conductive (before I learned TTF).

I now swap over to TTF in a situation like this (if I am not already hunting in TTF due to iron) and the truth is usually told. If I get deep grunts with no high conductive peep in any direction, I walk away.

I love my ETrac in iron rich areas because it sees what other machines leave behind!
