Two things I have found supprising about the Hawaiian Islands

There are chickens everywhere!! They are wild and when we arrived at this island I asked about them. The guy at the airport said that there were many more but the last hurricane killed a million, leaving a million now. It is really neat actually. They are banties.

The other is that I have seen monarch butterfly's on all the islands we have visited. I would not have believed they were here. We saw a lot of mongoos on the big island too

I hear tell that they now have a few Brown Tree Snakes...any mention of this when you were there? Also, what were the whales like? Were they as large as they appear to be in the movies? How close did you get to one? Are they large and dangerous like they were in that movie Mosley Dickerson or something like that....a large whale that sank a wooden sailing ship and killed the captain of the ship. Kelley (Texas) :)

My wife and I will be taking a year to tour the globe and Hawaii is on our itinerary. Being able to have a peek at Hawaii through your lens only reaffirms that Hawaii is a must see island for us. It's been a toss up for us whether to make the jump to New Zealand via Easter Island or Hawaii, now we can't decide whether we should go with Hawaii or just do both islands.
Your guide is on the money about the ferral chickens, they are all over Bermuda too. The hurricanes do a good job of population control but even then we have to do a round up ocassionally. Personally, I think they wind up onthe menu at Mr. Chicken.

Have fun and keep posting those beautiful pics,

Eric

Perhaps the population control would be unsustainable. I know our bantams are cute and all that, but that bloody rooster will crow at all hours and when he takes a mind to, he will try to attack us. .... especially when we are walking away from him. That is when we have a feather football... He keeps coming back for more and eventually, when he gets punted enough, he wanders off. Then a week or so later, he tries again.

Do people collect the eggs .... or are they too well hidden?

Love your stories bud.

Ours would sing at all hours of the night. I kinda liked it. Coyotes picked off most of them over the years. I wonder if they just let them wander for bug, tick control, thats why I let mine wander. Or the natives down on their luck had a walking KFC handy for dinner. I liked
the chickens that range for taste better also, same with turkeys. With all that lush greenery, got to give them a lot of protection.

I can't see them flying that distance twice a year. Far enough out to see that thats home and thats it. Get any pictures of the mongoose's? Don't they hunt snakes also? Your sure getting to cover all over the islands. I find it more interesting wandering the country side then hitting the tourist attractions. Some are ok but steady diet of them gets to me. Bottle up some of that heat and bring it back with you. How was that chopper ride?

as road kill. I don't know if the people eat any or not but I sure would, unless they are protected. I have not asked about that.

They are wild and will come around you but you can not approach them. On the drive from where we were beach combing yesterday we had to see a hundred or more but the people just ignore them. Enormous variety in colors too.

I agree with George with the butterfly's. There is no way they are migrating to Mexico

We flew into Oahu and spent a day then on to the Big Island, Next Maui and now Kawai. I like this island the most as it is smaller and much older than the others. Not much lava to be seen.

New Zealand is on my list if I ever get rich and Easter Island seems to be a gotta see. Lots of lost history there for sure

the people who stay in the tourist traps are good folk cause they don't overcrowd the real attractions :clapping:
Happy for you folks bud and also totally jealous!

then drove along the rim Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called the grand canyon of the pacific. We flew over it too and it is incrdible. Tomorrow is our last day and we are going on a cat for five hours, watching whales, Porpous and snorkling along some of the most beautiful coastline in the islands.

Then it is home monday:blink:
