two silver day

Hi - This morning I went to try a wooded area in a park. Last Thursday a cab driver saw me hunting this park and told me about a spot in the woods where there used to be a pond with gardens around it. This was before WWII, and not long after the war the area was abandoned and allowed to return to nature. Thursday I only had a half hour left to hunt when he told me this, but managed to find a 1942 Merc. Went back today with permethrin-treated clothes (for ticks). Total time was about 2 hours. Tough hunting, a lot of brush limits where you can swing, but right off the bat hit a 1908 Indian. Moved to a semi-open flat area, had a good nickel signal, but it was the old-style pull tab. A foot away had another nickel signal, but this one was a 1929 buffalo nickel. By an old fallen pine tree (picture) found a 1945 quarter, then 10 feet away on the other side of the tree trunk found a 1934 quarter. Also 1930, 1950D wheats. Poison ivy is starting to sprout, but I think I kept out of it. My first two silver coin day in a couple years. A little warm today, about 79, but no leaves on the trees yet, so no shade.

Went back to the same area this morning for two hours. Found another GW quarter (1942), about 15 feet from the first two. Also a 1935 Buffalo, and a Gunther beer good luck token. The watch is junk, stainless steel case. I wonder where the silver dimes are. Maybe because of the leaf litter and brush, I'm not getting close enough to the ground to pick them up? Or maybe they're just not there.

Great hunt!! Seems like an excellent site, so hopefully there's more there for next time!

Whenever you find those 1962 vintage pull tabs, you can be sure that silver was dropped in the area. What is the depth of the coins relative to the pull tabs?

The coins were pretty much the same depth as the pull tabs, 4-5 inches. I ended up getting 10 silver coins from this site, a couple indians, and three buffalos. Most wheats were from the 40s. I could only detect about 25% of the ground, the rest was very thick briars and vines. I may go back in the fall/winter, but the weeds are taking over now. I did some research and found that the site was in use as early as 1909.
