hi all, i managed to squeeze in two short hunts this past week - one at the spot near five forks battlefield, and one just south of petersburg. four nice flatbuttons are pictured, one with an eagle and "double gilt" backmarks, as well as a bunch of rivets. the top left corner rivet appears to be lead and field made. one of the rivets has a dragon on it, and another has "pat. sep.8, 85" on it. a piece of lead melt, a poncho rivet, and a small brass buckle - might be a kepi buckle, but it's real thin, so i don't know. a piece of an old hair barett is also shown.
the gold whatzit might be an old pocketwatch frame or adjustable pendant frame [?!] it came out the ground nice and shiny, so it must be at least heavily plated or gold. the top knob is stuck, and there's a wire running around the whole outside perimeter of the piece. it's about an inch and a half tall. interesting, though. i hope there's someone out there who will know what it is, 'cause i sure would like to know.
i'll try and hit the same spots again soon. been working a lot lately. thanks for reading, and for your help on the whatzit. hh,
