Two "Firsts"

Hi All,

My friend had knee surgery last week and has been cooped up for over a week. Not one to be immobile, he's been itching just to get out of the house. He asked me to take him out MD'ing, just so he could walk a little with me.

We went to a gathering area in a small nearby RI town, and after not finding anything of note for an hour or so, I got a signal that rang in nicely, but was jumping around due to me being close to the power lines on the street. Since I wasn't finding anything, I dug. After I took out the plug and stuck in the X1- I knew there was something good down there. Moved a little soil and into the hole fell a little beauty- my first Half Dime- an 1839 Seated.

Not more than 8 feet from that spot and less than 5 minutes- same type of signal. I think, no way! Down about the same depth- pull out some dirt and Bingo! Another small piece of silver. This time it was an 1830 Capped Half Dime! Nice Fine detail, but sadly it's bent and holed.

That was it for the finds for the day, but I couldn't have been happier.

HH,

Jeff

HELLO, I WAS OUT FOR ABOUT AND HOUR LAST WEEK WHEN I GOT A STRONG SIGNAL, WOW! BESIDE AND OLD SIDEWALK ABOUT 8 INCHES DOWN I GOT A BARBER QUARTER 1899 BARBER DIME, 1903 A BUFFALO NICKEL NO DATE, AND A OLD LATE 1800'S BLACK ONYX'S SILVER AND DIAMOND RING AND A OLD RAILROAD BADGE. I WAS SO EXCITED, TO FIND THIS IN ONE HOLE. THIS PLACE WAS FULL OF IRON NEXT TO A OLD RR DEPOT. HOW I SEE WHY MY BUDDY'S STAY AWAY FROM HERE:thumbup:THANK YOU GOD FOR IRON AND A EXPLORER XS. PS CODY YOUR IRON PROGRAM WORKS AWESOME IN THESE TYPE OF SITES. IVE BEEN USING IT ALOT IN HEAVY IRON WITH ICONS ON,THE IRON COMES THROUGH AS A LOW TONE,AND NICKELS COME AS A MEDIUM TONE AND SILVER COMES IN SWEET.FERROUS ON DEEP OFF,WE'LL TRY TO POST A PICTURE OF THIS SOON. THANKS PHIL:minelab:

If you do a bit of reading on them you'll get some insight into why they were holed.
My only bust half dime was hole too and with a square nail!

Jeff, I read a few times that some guys put more pride in finding these old ones with holes because they most likely belonged to sailors who did not trust any one aboard ship from rifling thru there gear while on the high seas so they would drill holes through their coins and thread them on string and wear them as necklaces while they were working on deck. So that adds alot more alure to that coin. Could have been a Pirate from Black Beards ship! Think of all the sweat it once had run over it! John, DIGGER BEGINNER, MI

NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL LUCK! Way to go. I live up in north dakota and I find an occasional seated but I myself have yet to find any American half-dimes (only canadian half-dimes).
