Two diffrent sound w/two diffrent Sov.GT's

I bought a used Sov.GT (4 and 1/2 years old) and i have a new one. Well the tones are very diffrent. When running a dime over both detectors the old one is a lower sound then the new one . Did Minelab update them in the last few years? Does anyone else have this change? All setting are the same with both GT's. GS

The one might have the Dixie Mods done to it. They change the tones when they do that.

Now you are going to ask what are Dixie Mods? Do a web search. Anything I post will probably get deleted. And the dealer that does the mods will not get specific in what they actually change. But I have had a few done by them including my current GT and the tones are very different.

I tried a search but came up with nothing. Under the battery pack it has a Dixie Metal Detectors sticker. So what is the dixie mod? If anyone can help , please do . With the detector sounding the way it does, it sounds a lot diffrent then my new one. HH GS

Not sure what is all done and think on my XS it has silent search set too, but for me the tones are set at max so the high tones get higher pitched and with me and my bad hearing it was very hard to tell the difference in those close tones, the nickles almost sounded like my copper pennies sounded. Mine I had done was a Sovereign XS and had the mods done to it as some thought it made it better, so I did some test before I sent it in and test after I got it back and for me it wasn't as good on depth or ID which could be the higher pitch it was set at. I opened my XS up and using my GT and listening to the tones I was able to set the tones back to what they were before and I was happy with it with the factory setting of the tones. This could be I was used to the tones and knew what they all meant and could do well with it, so you have one with the tones set higher and what else was done to it on the mod so give it a try and see if you feel the one with the mod is better or the one with out it and let us know. If you like it without the mods you can set it back to the factory setting of the tones like I did. Maybe you will like the mod too as some do.

its just the tones are adjusted differently, not necessarily a dixie mod, anyone can do it.
here is a pic from this forum of the innards of the GT. one of these pots will raise/lower the tones of your GT to your liking. Ive done this to several Sovs over the years, get it right for your own hearing on certain objects. Remember your just adjusting the range, you cant individually adjust the tone for an object. So if your raising the tones for say a dime, your also raising the tones for pulltab or nickel range.

The last Sovereign XS I bought had the tone set high and had to be tuned lower.I have problems using a Sovereign with the tone pot out of adjustment, which can be set too high or low.My suggestion for anyone wanting to go with a higher tone make a slight adjustment and take out in the field for a short hunt.An air test can be deceiving.HH Ron

I also agree to do a little at a time if you want to change the tones, but first mark the spot that Minelab had it set so you can go back to the factory setting if needed to be.
I bought a couple used one from people that were having a problem with theirs and seen both had the tones set high as they bought it that way off the Internet. I feel whoever did this didn't like it and sold the Sovereign instead of putting the tones back again and just sold them. Now before I buy any more used sovereigns I ask if there is any mods done to it and what they are before I will buy.
My high pitched tones of my ears are 110% gone (Total) and with the Sovereign the way it comes from the factory and using my headphones I can hear the tones well and the difference in the tones, so like Ron I like it the best with the factory setting and to me the best depth too for my old coin hunting when I can get out.

Rick a hunting buddy of mine has the same problem as you, he barely hears high tones. He used to take trees down for a living, didnt use ear protection till he started loosing his hearing, chainsaws and hearing dont mix very well.

He and I went up to a dealer in north jersey to buy our sovs when they first came out and he still has his and uses it. Never sent it in for repair and still uses the sunray nimh pack he bought for it many years ago. those packs were good options back then. Minelab certainly makes a good quality machine as long as you take care of it.

Hope your enjoying your summer, Neil.

Thank guys, i am going to bring it out and see which sounds i like better ,then take it from there. I thought maybe there was something wrong with it at first, Thanks for the comments, i learn something new every day. GS

I've owned few GT's and one had the Dixie mods done to it (bought it used). All I know about that mod is that the tones were higher. I sold it and kept a GT with the regular tones.
