Two detectorist walk into a ..... (sound like a joke coming?)

Pete in MI

New member
township office that has a park behind it. The first detectorist goes in and asks how old the park is. The staff tell him it is only a couple years old. He says "Not old enough" then leaves.

The second detectorist goes in and chats with one of the staff he met last year at a Neighborhood Watch meeting. He asks questions such as:
"Do you know who owns this vacant lot where a house used to stand?", "What happens to properties that the back taxes are in arrears on and remain unpaid? - Do these properties become property of the township or the county?" "Where can I get a copy of the plat map for this area?" "Property that is scheduled to be 'the future site of the Township Fire Department' is that open for metal detecting?" "The property where the township is going to be putting in a new park soon, does anyone know what used to be on that property?"

Which detectorist do you think found out where the oldest house is in the area - and is owned by one of the staff and said No one has ever detected on the property and has given verbal permission to detect as long as she can have some of the finds?

Which detectorist do you think found out that there used to be a hotel..one of the oldest in the area was located on certain property - that he can detect on - and no one else has ever detected there?

Which detectorist do you think got the Superintendent's attention and was asked to find a property marker on property owned by the township...seems the one with the next piece of property is encroaching on township property. Which detectorist do you think said "Not only will I try to locate it but when I do, I have GPS and will mark the coordinates by GPS as well as make it visible to be seen"?

Which detectorist do you think left a business card with his name, address, phone, etc. and with Detectorist Creed on the back of the card?

Well, there is more but maybe you get the point. No idea who the other guy was - Detectorist #1. But I am proud to say Detectorist #2 is me. Color me smiling.

It pays to know people...even Neighborhood Watch people. It pays to go asking questions at your local township office.

One of the things that was interesting is the Supervisor had a necklace about to fall apart and was asking a secretary to fix it. I jokingly said too bad you didn't lose it so I could find it with my metal detector. That is when I gave her my card and when she asked about finding property stakes.

I see a budding friendship developing with the township. Hope the other detectorist finds himself a nice park.

Great post Mike, a lesson for all of us.
