Two CTX 3030's relic hunting

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
Two of us hunted a hillside that is known locally as bullet hill, a backstop of a Civil War shooting range/training camp in the first year of the Civil War.

The CTX's were challenged to the max there because the bullets were from 8 to 15 inches deep and some of them would give a weak beep in open screen, Ferrous-Coin but in pinpoint we could clearly hear them. I should have tried other modes besides Ferrous-Coin. The very deep bullets gave no audible signal at all but the display clearly showed a 12-31, 12-33 target was under the coil and again pinpoint confirmed it was time to dig another hole. This has to be some of the toughest digging I have ever done, roots everywhere and we we probably on a 45 degree incline and most holes were 12 inches deep or more, that wore this old man out and after 2 1/2 hours I called it quits.

Check out Nathan's arm down in the hole retrieving bullet number 5 in the same hole....... that was probably a 15 incher. Nathan got a head start on me and had nine before I even started, he ended up with 21 bullets this morning and I had eight .69,s and a pistol .32 and a couple of fragments.

Amazing the CTX gave good conductive numbers as well as ferrous numbers on targets that deep. Seems I need to be a watching my screen more and listening at the same time.

Really great results in tough conditions!! I doubt I would have lasted 2 hours!

Congrats on all the relics!!

That is deep when you have to tape a rope to the end of your Propointer so you don't lose it, if you let go. Nice finds guys.

That's a lot of work with a hand digger. Better get a Sampson or a Piranha before going back there.

Hi Dave, I haven't lost a pinpointer yet since I tethered it to my pouch. BTW Nathan really likes his new Minelab pinpointer.

Congrats Larry,,, makes me want to head out to my spot..

Pretty darn cool Larry - wish I knew of a spot like that over here in Michigan!

Michigan had 90,000 troops in the CW and they were mustered and trained somewhere in your state. You may very well have CW prison camps in Michigan as well all you have to do is find out where and get permission to hunt. Illinois is rich in Civil War history as well and that is where I have been finding most of my relics all found out about from the Internet and word of mouth. Here is a start for you Doc:
