Two compadres

Hi all, I'm brand new and just getting my feet wet in the detecting world, I started out with an old Whites 1000, but quickly realized I'd better become a part of the compadre learning grounds. I ordered a new 8" model before Thanksgiving and before it arrived I wished I'd of ordered the smaller coil version, so I ordered two, actually ended up only being out of pocket for one as of now because amazon rocks like that. I don't know where to start, I'm even more confused than I was before I became compadre rich. The 8" arrived and I put it together, tossed some coins on the ground and beep! Beep, beeeeep, boomp beep.. Everytime I flicked my wrist this puppy wud scream, I was disappointed, it appeared I got ahold of a bad apple, it happens, so I told amazon, they refunded my money and I ordered the small coil version, it seems to work flawlessly, it has some of the erratic beeps but not anything like the 8" version. It's lighter and feels "less in hand" than the 8", it looks like it's been refurbished, it has had two serial numbers, one stuck over the first on the card, I know they have lifetime warranty, and I have to send one back anyway so since the 8inch was clearly malfunctioning I easily removed the two screws and the knob was raised up to one side, I didn't go any further but anyone have any suggestions on why it's so squirrely? I just got it, hate to send it back to tesoro so soon.

I don't have a Compadre with a 8 inch coil to compare it to my Compadre that has the smaller coil. It's my understanding that the smaller coil can handle EMI and bad ground better than the larger coil can. That's a plus in some cases since the Compadre doesn't have a external ground balance and sensitivity adjustment.

could be EMI making it go nuts, take it out away from thhe house or any buried powerless and try again, + if any big metal was near it may have affected it it could be rebar in the cement flora or metal duct work under the flore

I've carried it several places, tesoro suggested emi as well. I did forget to mention I'm in an area with red clay soil with plenty of rocks, when I went into sand areas around the lake it calmed down considerably. I'm tempted to just barely touch the gb screw or sensitivity to see if that helps, tempted, not confident.. Common sense and 15 years of machining guides my judgment on things of such precision, but electronics isn't my field, I'd hate to damage one of these beauties..

Don't mess with it,man. The Compadres are great little machines.
Learn it and what it tells you. Then if you make a change and it isn't what you thought, at least you know what it should be.
Oh, and BTW...welcome.

Hi Bg09, Just so you will know, the Compadre does have a GB Pot and a Sens. Pot. Do a search on Compadre & 7"coil by JB(MS) and there is a pic of the location of the pots. Sens. pot can be adjusted if it gets squirrely again and you choose to. Just be very careful and use a tiny screwdriver. I would give it a go as is though now that it has settled down,. As for GB Pot , best not to go near it , but if so be sure and get help from someone that has been there and done it. With the extra little beep now and then I think will be riding the very edge and at peak on the Sens./ depth without being in the squirrely range. Hopefully someone more knowing can clarify for you. I cranked the Sens. up on my Amigo II (Compadre's Daddy/brother ) and it gave me a little boost in depth, but if your Compadre is getting good depth as is, then just leave Him be and go have some fun with him. HH Charlie .

I guess I'll leave it be for now, I really hope I start to fall in love with this thing like everyone else. If this had of been my first detector I'd be in awe, but for the life of me I can't shake that nagging feeling that is telling me to give the eurotek pro a chance with the pinpointer for $239.00. It isn't the multiple tones or digital readout and all the bells and whistles, don't get me wrong, I'm not badmouthing the compadre at all! And I'm sure more time will bring me closer to feeling the love, but in all honesty I just feel like I'm gonna outgrow it's limits before I had hoped.. Oh, BTW, the black wire under the knob that must be a ground wire, well it was bugging me because the knob was chewing into the pot and leaving plastic shavings on the front. I gingerly, removed the nut and wow, a glob of solder under one side had it off center, but there seems to still be a short somewhere. The 8" coil on a air test with a silver coin was 7.5" depth vs the 6" with the smaller coil, lol.. I'm not gonna sweat it much, I'll pass it onto my 8yr old daughter wen I get the itch for a silver u max, Cibola, Tejon, Lobo, etc... Thanks for the feedback, this is a great forum and glad to be a part of it with all this knowledge...

I have 2 compadres one is a 7" version and one is the 5.75" I put a connector on my 7" one and after much testing of other coils including, CSC, 10x12 dd, 7", 8", 5.75. The 5.75 is my favorite.

Sounds like you may need a Tesoro with manual GB. The Outlaw or Vaquero would work better in the soil you mentioned and if you don't like it I've got a mint Xterra 705 you could try out.

Sounds great, but that is waay outta my budget at the present, but thanks for the offer.
It's raining most of the week here so I did some more common sense tests on what I think may be the problem, I discovered the pot, or knob seems to be the problem, I guess I'll be sending her back to Prescott and going from there. I'll use the 5.75 and just be happy. It seems like adjustable ground balance on a machine is where the money starts, maybe I would find more if I'd hush and hunt..
