Two Cibola's then a Vaquero and now a Tejon

I have had two Cibola detectors, one I bought new from a local dealer and the other I got in a trade from G. Fatizzi and they were both very quiet in trash, without all that snap, crackle and pop you hear on other tesoro models. I was so surprised with the depth and even at full discrimination it lost no depth in my soil that I had to try the Vaquero, which was very easy to ground balance, quiet and seemed to have an inch in depth and hit harder over the Cibola. I sold both Cibola's and picked up a used Tejon from S. Steward and I was able to ground balance it as easy as the Vaquero and the Tejon is deeper by an inch and a half max. I should have known a factory fix balance detector will never go as deep as the same unit with a manual ground bal. because soil conditions can change within a couple of feet. Like some others I got caught up in Tesoro's new unit hype over at the other forum of getting top performance for less money, but I am glad I did because I came away with two good units, one for competition hunts with a three set frequency switch and the other with the dual discriminator for jewelry hunting, they both are great on tiny gold items like my StingrayII. If you are trying to decide which to buy I hope this helped and support your local dealer. ZZ Happy Trails to you.

You sound like a reasonable person who is not going to hype anything. I own a Tejon so I hope you don't mind answering a few questions.
1. Is the V that much quieter than the T in trash? In particular a spot infested with rusted nails, and also what about small bits of foil?
2. On small gold how does the RayII vs the T vs the V do in depth comparisons? I have considered a used RayII for my freshwater hunting, but I suspect Tesoro will be bringing out a new machine based on the HOT ciruit used in the C&V. So I am waiting to see what happens, if only they would bring out a copy of the Fisher CZ-20 but for freshwater.

There has been some apparent hype that the Vaquero had the same depth of detection as the Tejon...all conditions being equal. Reading between the lines, I have been slowing coming to the conclusion that the Tejon is tuned to the max, and that Tesoro possibly backed off just a tab on the Vaquero to give a somewhat more quiet mode of operation. I am reluctant to say this because I am basing my opinion on "hear say," not based on actual use by me of either of the two detectors.
In the near future, I will probably replace my Bandido II uMax with the Vaquero as I have been informed that it should give some extra depth of detection, again all conditions being equal. I am glad that some folks like you are posting some opinions based on actual use, not based on the motivation of selling metal detectors...thanks for the information. Please have a great day! This is something I've not shared on any other forums but your comments reminded me of something.
I use to be an X5 user. If I ran into questions or a problem I would just call Troy and talk to him on the phone. When the Tejon came out there was a flurry of activity surrounding it and the X5 vs Tejon stuff began. I was convinced the Tejon was better than my X5 by hearsay so I posted on the board that I had my X5 for trade for a Tejon. Troy saw my post and emailed me saying he had something he wanted to talk to me about. So I gave him a call.
It turns out he had gotten a Tejon to open up and see what they had done and if it were similar to the X5. He gave me the story on how the X5 came about and he said one of the early prototype models was VERY similar to the current production model Tejon, but that he found something different in the circuitry that helped push it to the edge of performance and still be stable...and that is what you have in the current model X5s. He admitted that Tesoro was close on the path of the X5. He said he felt the X5 was still the better of the two but that if I wanted a Tejon he would give me his and some $$ for exchange of my X5. I thought that was pretty strong so I kept the X5. Later on I would eventually get a Tejon for myself.
Now we have the Cibola and Vaquero on the scene...with them being models based on the H.O.T. design. I can't help but wonder if Tesoro engineers discovered the same thing as Troy did as far as making the units more stable...and implemented that change in the C & V. In that stance...the Vaquero would be the equivelant to the X5 and the Cibola the equivelant to the X3. I don't know how close or how far off that is...but your comments reminded me of that conversation about the X5 and Tejon.

I never really thought about the competitive nature of detecting companies and that they might ever open up a competitors detector to see what they were doing. You said that maybe Tesoro "discovered" the same thing that Troy did, and implemented those things into the design. That word "discovered" seems rather poignant to me in light of this internal revelation. How much do detector companies "borrow" from each other!?! Thanks for an great post!

I was waiting for a new water detector from Tesoro also. About to move out of an Excalibur. I was thinking about waiting till the Spring when most new detectors come out before I bought a Tiger Shark. Talking to Tesoro several times I was urging them to put the H.O.T circuit in the Tiger Shark. I now have it from a direct source not to wait any longer. My Tiger Shark will be ordered as soon as it is time to hit the water again...
Hope this helps you..

About the first twelve machines of any new product is sold to competitors. Every manufacturer buys each new detector and rips it apart to see what may be new.
Fisher Labs was the begining of metal detectors. Whites copied them and paid a royalty for many years after they were sued by Fisher...they may still be paying royalties to Fisher. Each new brand that came out after that....copied the ones before it. Interesting ain't it??

Yes the Vaquero is very quiet,at a setting just above the word iron on the face plate, you will not hear any noise from nails, you have to set my Tejon at the foil mark to remove the nail noise but you still get a weak snap, crackle, pop. Foil comes in so many sizes and shapes so both units are the same with foil and lets not forget small gold lady rings will read like foil.
My testing on tiny gold items shows the Tejon and Vaquero and the Cibola being equal and they were all a little better in depth and sensitivity then my StingrayII but I can bet which is better under water. I like the TR mode feature on the Stingray that helps in identifying iron both large and small with a long wavering tone, all other metals hits short and solid. For coin hunters that don't need a meter I believe the Cibola and Vaquero is a good choice and at max discrimination you get all coins except nickels and you lose no depth and knock out all trash and also large iron, like cannon balls in all sizes. The Tejon at max discrimination will also get the coins but you will also get large iron like horse shoes and cannon balls, its a true relic machine and who hunts for relics at full disc.

Thanks Arturo for the detailed reply, I don't know how much time you have spent jewelry hunting with the Tejon, but if you haven't seen two posts I made in late 2004, I think you may find them of interest.

I am going to guess, you may find the quietness of the Vaquero more of an advantage than the dual disc of the Tejon in trashy areas. But if you put a smaller coil on the Vaquero, you will probably end up with a very formidable choice of weapons. Good luck on your gold hunting!

Well Mayor, it's good to see the creeping crud has not totally diminished your keyboard skills. It was pretty funny watching you play rope-a-dope over on the TD. They're damned lucky you didn't have full command of your powers. You did help me enjoy more than a couple of bags of microwave popcorn, so all your efforts did at least have some value.
If you have indeed convinced Tesoro to include the HOT in the Tiger, then maybe you should consider running for a higher office, County Commissioner? Wouldn't be the first time I voted for a scoundrel if it served my own self interest.
All kid'n aside, will Tesoro make any other changes in the Tiger, if they do incorporate HOT? Three or four tones would be a beautiful thing. How about T/R, like Arturo has mentioned? It helps him with iron ID. I wish they would just throw the towel in on trying to make it work in salt.
So when did you say you were going to send me the brochure on this Tiger?
And I do hope you are feeling better.

Be easy on me or I am going to send this crud over to you via an e-mail..
As far as I know..there will be no changes to the Tiger for a while. The water machine market is small compared to others so it will have to wait. I am not going to buy a Tiger Shark for salt water. Over the last couple of months I have built myself a pulse. It sits in the corner right now waiting till spring.
The Tiger Shark will be for the brackish waters that we normally hunt. I used to have a Stingray and found more gold with it than any other machine. Got caught up in the Excal thing and somehow forgot how much more I used to find.
A lot of guys in South Florida only use a TR detector. I tried to use a VLF down there and it would not work worth crap. A TR in salt water is GREAT...like Arturo said.
No sales pitches here..I ain't paying the Guvner a dime to be here. Trying to get a banner over here but they have not called me back. Maybe The Guvner knows just how much he would be biting off...
Have a good one BB

Hey Mayor, if you have the Crud that's been going on here for about 45 days, you need to really watch it. Once it gets into your lungs you've got real trouble. I have several of my people who have had it for three weeks, seem to start to get better for a week, and then re-lapse. And most of them are young'uns, not old geezers and geezerettes. Some of them have been to the doctor for the bend over shot routine(no lollipops thanks to managed care)!
Mayor you ain't 23 no more! You need to stay home and do virtual relic hunting!

I went through a Z-Pack and got well. Three days later it came back with full force. That was last Saturday at the very begining of that hunt I had been looking forward to. The real problem is that I have a kidney transplant and have to take anti-rejection meds every day. I'm laying low till I get over this stuff. It is everywhere down here..

to set up the dual discriminator as you stated on a used Tejon? If no such part exist maybe you can sell your idea to Tesoro for a new Tejon II.

Unknown at this time, I have not even taken the face plate off of the machine. I may or may not keep the Tejon, so I am not going to mess with the one I have. If Tesoro comes out with a Tiger based on the HOT circuitry in the C&V, or a multi-tone machine based on the the same HOT scheme, I will most likely sell the Tejon.
I am also considering a Fisher ID Excel, probably not as good on small gold, but reportedly good in trash. If I keep the Tejon I will probably go to a smaller coil and look at modifying the Dual Disc.

Besides.. Your bark is much worse than your bite... But as stated.. I've never heard a word from you. You said a few weeks ago you were going to call me but never got the call either...
Send me an email from the forum as those seem to always make it to me...
