Twist off bottlecaps and ace 350...

Dan-Pa.

New member
With 20 years detecting experience bought an Ace 350 for local parks..To my surprise called everyone of those blasted twist off bottlecaps a coin in the dime-quarter block.

Any seasoned veterans out there with an Ace 350 have any methods they use to tell a coin from one of the blasted caps.

Page 26 of the manual tells me that is normal??? does anyone on the forum collect them and has me totally confused...

First trip to a park with an Ace 350 and ready to wrap it round tree so appreciate any help...

Thanks ahead of time....Dan

PS: I will be on the phone with Garrett in the AM since when does a manufacturer produce a unit to collect twist off bottlecaps..

I find most twist offs VDI in the 77 range on the AT Pro, but some VDI higher up to the quarter range, those are the ones that your having trouble with in the "dime-quarter block" on your ACE 350. They will be louder than a quarter though for the most part on the At Pro with its proportional audio.

Since your only getting bell tones, you don't have that hint of identification ... BUT if its any consolation I dig alot of them, and one day it just might be a silver ring instead of a twist off.

Hey the machines a METAL detector and apparently its working........ I have a 350 and I don't know of any magic pill that will prevent you from digging some, its just an integral part of the Hobby.

sometimes my 1500 will peg [ image ] one as a quarter, after digging several, i started sweeping and imaging at 90*. usually,, it will give a GRUNT instead of a belltone, from another angle, and i let that sucker sleep.

:rofl:Sounds like you're gonna have to get a concentric search coil if you don't wanna dig so many bottlecaps hunting a local park with a machine that is designed to hunt for relics in the field.:wiggle:
All double "D" search coils will identify a bottlecap as a coin(because they are round and flat like a coin). That's just the nature of the beast. You can try usin' the old "edge pass" trick to identify bottlecaps with a double "D" search coil. It will only work with shallow bottle caps. Just sweep the search coil over the target and move it as you sweep to where the target passes beyond the edge of the search coil and fades away. A coin will continue to register as a coin until it fades away and stops signalling. A bottlecap will change from a coin signal to iron just before it fades away. If the area is too junky and you can't sweep past the target without getting another signal, then just raise the search coil instead, until the signal fades away. Coin signal will stay good and bottlecap will signal iron before fadding away. This only works with shallow bottlecaps. Maybe three to four inches deep.:detecting:
I suggest you get a concentric search coil if you're gonna be hunting parks for coins. Ace 350 is made for hunting relics in the woods and fields and such where there is not a predominance of bottlecaps. That's why it comes standard with that big double "D" search coil. The 6.5"x9" elliptical concentric is probably the most popular search coil for hunting parks. The lil' sniper is great as well.
I don't use the Ace 350. Just my $.02:biggrin: Happy Hunting!:)

Unfortunately Garretts site carries the Ace350 as Highly Recommended

Your post is right on my friend and after using just about all the Garrett units made in the last 20 years well Garrett has let me down on this one and changes are in order whether its advertising or choice of coils when selling and will discuss this with the powers to be when Garret opens up as there is a time difference here in Pa. Interesting at best so many Garrett fans on this forum and so little interest when a forum member has a problem.

Tip of the hat my friend and certainly appreciate your input as its certainly appreciated...

I'm pretty sure he had a method using the toe of the coil or a wiggle to tell if it's a bottlecap.

He called it logo discrimination or edge pass discrimination or something similar

Nature of the beast and have gotten some good suggestions via E-mail if it ever stops raining will try them out....DD coils have their plus and minus features and will adjust.....Dan

Ahhhh....that's what you get with a DD coil!! You'll learn to tell the difference. Sweep slow over the target and you'll hear that iron lowtone in Zero disc. It takes a little getting used to after being accustomed to getting a belltone and digging up a coin like with the 250. The 350 is touted as a low cost relic machine and it does a great job in that area with the DD coil. It likes gold too!! Paid for mine plus in 3 hunts!!

I know with my ATPro with the DD coil a bottle cap hits all over. 81,77,46. This is the same bottle cap find. No consistency, so I don't dig them

I have found using the 6.5"x9" elliptical concentric works best on the twist bottle caps. I use the coin mode with the first 2 iron segments turned own. This is not perfect but it does cut down on the bottle caps. If you hear the bell tone and then the iron you know it is a bottle cap.

Yeah, I almost always use DD search coils. Mainly because they cover more ground at depth than compared to a concentric. Also because they handle mineralized ground very well.:garrett::detecting:
Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

This is what I do Dan. Whenever I get a belltone coin signal I center the
target going right to left without going into pinpoint. I start raising the coil
all the while keeping the target centered. The signal will start out being a
belltone both directions. It will stay a belltone in both directions as long as
you have a signal if it is a coin. On a bottlecap, somewhere along the way,
the signal will change to belltone one way and something else the other.
I have dug my share of bottlecaps just to check this out and it works for me
on my Ace350. I never use the pinpoint button. Maybe this will work for you too.
Hope so. Good hunting to you Dan ! Gene

Can't speak for the Ace 350 but on my Ace 250 I find lots of bottle caps, pull tabs and zinc pennies
whenever I dig .1 cent. Now I know people say you should dig those.1cent pennies because your going to
miss small rings but My experience has NEVER found a ring/gold when digging those .1 cent readings.
Of course there is always the first time.
