turning a vaquero into a silver umax or cibola?

New member
without going into the details, i want to hunt with someone who will be using a silver or cibola and i'll be using a vaquero....it's important for me NOT to beat them! what's a good way to adjust the vaquero as a 'pre-set ground balance' type machine? in this case, i don't want to go deeper than maybe 6", sort of like an ace 250. or how can i turn it into an ace 250 just for this hunt? we'll be hunting parks. i know this sounds crazy but i'd sure appreciate your help!

I can only say...
WHAT???

You can't, really.

I have a ground balance modded Cibola on the way, and it was modified by removing the internal ground balance trim pot that was responsible for the preset ground balance setting. I now have manual control over this setting.

To do what you are asking, you would need to disconnect the cables from the ground balance knob and solder on the chip that has a preset ground balance setting, which the Vaquero lacks. Unless there is some other way of doing this that I am not aware of.

Even if you could do this, you really shouldn't. If you want to decrease the depth of your Vaquero, just turn down the sensitivity until it won't detect past 6".

Tesoro may have the best service after the sale in the business but mod a unit internally and they won't touch it, BYE bye warranty...

Again 309 hit the nail on the head and experienced detectorists if they can afford it usually have more than one unit to cover situations and its nice to hit one area with one unit and then another and the same goes for acc. coils...

Yeah, Turn the sensitivity down AND set the g/b to where it goes silent when lowered to ground. I hope this doesn't give whoever you're hunting with a dim view of Tesoro, although I have a Silver umax and it goes deeper than you think.

thanks a lot guys for the advice! i didn't mean a permanent modification....just a quick adjustment so i could get some shi##y performance for the day. much thanks!

Good luck.
When swinging a Vaquero it is hard to have a bad day.

If you really want to under perform ... turn the ground balance full one way or the other. Way too positive has you starting to miss the high conductivity silver and way too negative has you falsing on the ground. And like said before, turn the sensitivity down.

On second thought, may want to turn it way positive so you are not driven nuts by the potential of lots of falsing.

Good luck trying to accomplish what ever you are trying to accomplish!

Instead of mucking up your machine, just don't dig every signal. Simple as that. Hunt like always, only dig every second or third target. Simple as that.

Old coon had the. best idea also raise ur
Coil so it wont go as deep

Also go all out and show her why she needs a vaquero

thanks again guys! took your suggestions and it worked great. i mostly, turned the sensitivity down, turned the threshold down, adjust the GB to the far right, and set the discrimination up high and...presto...i have an ace 250! someone from another site suggested using the 3" x 18" coil....good for 6" to 8", cover's a lot of ground and doesn't go too deep.
