Tuning question...and what about an XP DEUS???

Hello all...just today joined the forum and have been using either a CZ5 or CZ6 since the mid 1990s with excellent results! I have had a GTA350, 1265-X, and a Bounty Hunter over the years, but the CZ detectors are simply the most sensitive, reliable, and rugged instruments out there - in addition to being more user-friendly than new detectors. The 1265-X was my second detector I bought used in 1990 when I was only 13 years old, and I kept it for about 7 years. Got very familiar with it which I guess laid the groundwork for using a CZ later on...

Anyway, enough rambling...I don't currently have a detector since I sold it last year - and have been borrowing my dad's CZ-6 which is like coming home to fresh apple pie! His detector has the usual 8" coil, and I don't believe I've ever used a 5" or any other size coil on this unit. I see that the coveted FZ-12 coil is getting hard to come by these days, but soon enough I will be in the market for one! But for now I have a question...

I've read where some CZ machines are "hot"...and dad's air-tests a dime to 10" with all the right settings, and about 12-13" on a quarter. This is the 8" coil, stock. My question is: When I do finally purchase a CZ for myself and eventually come across an FZ-12 coil, do I need to keep the FZ-12 on it since the machine has been "tuned" for that specific coil? What happens when I find a trashy spot and want to go back to the 8" coil? I know that in optimum conditions the difference between the coils' depth may be 2-3", but that's where the goodies are around here - deeper and out of range of normal non-CZ detectors.

I found an area today where one could set up an iron mine because of all the subsurface garbage present, and I think it's a little too trashy for the CZ to handle. May be pissing in the wind here, and maybe the wrong forum, but I'll ask anyway....Anyone here used an XP DEUS and had better results IN TRASHY AREAS? I've seen some Youtube videos of people using this machine, but for $2K you could get five used CZ5 or CZ6 detectors and use all different coils! What do yall think?

As long as the coil is not faulty (or way out of tolerance) you tune to the coil by ground balancing it correctly to the ground you are hunting. No problem swapping between coils that are designed for the CZ; the FZ-12, and the 5 inch, 8 inch and 10.5 inch CZ coils; just ground balance it and set up the other controls to your preferences.

The 5 inch coil looses depth over the 8 inch, but can get you better results in very trashy areas than the 8 inch. Work it slowly and come at the area from different directions. The CZ uncovers good targets in trash best when worked slowly and when making sure you get good overlap on the coil sweeps.

Personally, I grab either a Tesoro or F75 to hit the really dense trashy areas; and always work those areas with a small coil. CZ with 5 inch coil does well, but does take a little more time working the area slowly and meticulously to bring up partially masked targets. No detector is perfect for all conditions; but a CZ sure is a good detector. So, that's my 2 cents!
Cheers,

I'm really impressed with the Deus from what I've read. Fast recovery delay makes it great in iron. I've heard good and bad about depth, however. Some spots are just full of iron for a CZ. I'm thinking about buying a Deus and also a 5 inch coil for my CZ70.

I've been using a Deus about 2&1/2 years and a CZ3D for 3 years. The Deus was designed to pull non ferrous targets out of ancient iron infested sites. Very fast response/recovery which can be increased for better target separation or decreased for better depth. Excellent for hunting nail ridden sites, though round items like nuts and washers can fool it at times. Many have reported difficulty distinguishing bottle caps, but they haven't really been a problem for me. In my Midwest soil, the Deus with stock 9" DD coil is about as deep as the CZ with 8" concentric. Pulled a lot of silver out of some very trashy sites with it. Dug my share of trash with it too. ID (both tones and VDI) is not as quite accurate as the CZ or some other machines. I bought mine straight from the factory before there was a US distributor in place. At that time XP was offering a pretty good discount just to get some machines in the US and generate some initial interest. It's hard to justify the current price for the Deus or ANY VLF machine IMO. If you want a less expensive machine to compliment the CZ.....any Fisher/Tek with a 5" coil for trashy sites and nails. Use the CZ with 8" coil (or larger) for deep targets and low trash, 5" coil for moderate trash.

The more I read about the DEUS the more I get excited about it. As far as I can tell it seems to separate ferrous from non-ferrous more accurately and quicker than other detectors. I'm sure yall have seen the YouTube videos of the XP DEUS vs other detectors...the learning curve seems involved, but I will have plenty of time during the off-season for that.

Speaking of separation, dad's CZ6 sifted through two nails to see this nice 1936 Wheatie today - got a hit at about 5" and a small 1-inch piece of a nail turned up first. Resweeping showed the target still present, and out popped the cent. Swept it again to find a large bent nail 3" below the cent - but this is at one of those "hammered" sites too. Dug a squaretab signal today that turned out to be a dropped .54 cal CW 3-ringer, much to my surprise! Reswept and another signal was 2" away...it was a zinc penny, which was weird because of the initial ID. This area was paved over starting in the 1980s until last year - so this area is relatively free of modern trash. It definitely warrants a return visit!

This site will now become a disc golf course, so future detecting will be preserved...too bad I'm moving out of the city in the next year or two...

I currently use a F75Ltd/Se with 11" and 5" coils, but would love to have a CZ3D/Deus combo to cover my dirt huntin'. A huntin' buddy of mine uses the Deus/Etrac and does well, but something about the analog CZ's just give a sweet sound on deep coins, nickels too!
