TTF Sniffs Out Some Keepers

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
Well for the first day of December it felt more like May. I managed a little time this evening to hunt, so I went up to the old farmhouse I hunt often. The finds are getting slim and I like to try different tactics every time I go, Today I stuck with TTF and my 6X8 SEF coil to see what it would turn out. I have only used TTF about two other times and only come out with pull tabs and screw caps. It was very slow going and didn't find much. I got around the back of the house that has a heavy amount of iron and got a high tone next to a low tone. The first target to come up was a very rusty nail or hinge pin, and the second was a small eagle button. About 8' from that hole was another high tone mixed with a low tone. I dig a plug and I see a back piece of a spur! But this is not just any piece of spur, but another piece of spur that my 13 year old boy found about 15' from this piece back on one of our first hunts at this site in July. I have been over this area a lot with a mostly open screen but the iron always mask the other targets.
I found the 1917 Merc and Wheats on Wednesday on my way back home from working out of town in an empty lot where a house was. The man that gave me permission said a lot of guys had been over there but maybe they had missed something. I was happy to find one more silver for November. Good luck on your next hunt, David.

TTF is a great method of hunting. TTF is now my primary hunting technique and I go conductive only if there is no iron in the area.

I pulled up about twenty wheaties yesterday and today in an area that has been hunted by others in the past. I actually pulled one wheaty up with a rusty nail stuck to it.

It's the only way to hunt in the iron. Way to go on the Wheats. What coil do you use in TTF?

Been using TTF whenever Iron is about and love it too.

A small site where a house was demolished I've gridded out at least 10'ish times on multi, about 10mx10m and I'm the slow methodical type. Hit the same spot with TTF recently and pulled approx 30 more valid targets, 9 of which where coins with one silver.

Very impressive settings

Here is another example of how well TTF works! This old green wheat in the same hole as a rusty iron ring/pipe. Both the low tone and the high tone would go off at the same time. No reason to avoid the heavy iron areas.

Ok I'm dumb Lol what is TTF?

No you're not, it's short for Two Tone Ferrous, I should have put that in my post. It is a mode the Etrac can be set to. Instead of the multi tones for conductive signals, you set it up only for two tones for all targets. Then you run the detector without little to no discrimination. You will here a low tone when you pass over iron and a high tone for the good targets. You have to go very slow to catch every signal. It takes some getting used to, as you will here everything in the ground. Your ID values/numbers will be off a lot of times if there is iron in the hole, so you have to dig it all. But that's a good thing if your on an old site. You will also need to use a small coil in this mode for better target seperation. I use the 8X6 SEF, but just got a Sunray X-5 yesterday. Goes4ever has got some great info on this mode and I think there is some info in Andy Sabisch's handbook as well. I hope this helps, David

Here is a link to the article Terry Goes4Ever wrote. You should check out his site too. He has got a lot of time behind the Etrac and has made some amazing finds. His site is one of the reasons I upgraded to an Etrac this summer.
