Hunted with a good friend yesterday at an old school. We have always had at least one good find in the past, but yesterday the oldies were popping up like we hadn't ever hunted it. I had my etrac and when I started I was in stock coin mode. I was iron nulling quite a bit, so I decided to give TTF a shot. As soon as I did I got a blaring 12-15 solid repeatable. Dug it and out popped my first 1937 Buffalo Nickel!
Continued the hunt and about 30 minutes later I got another solid repeatable among iron. I could tell there was a good target in there because of the high tone and the repeatable but it was deep, meter was maxed at the bottom of the scale and I decided why not....and started diggin. By the time I got to about 8 inches I had already pulled out 3 small rusty nails and was starting to lose hope ....kept scanning the hole and target was still there, so I thought maybe my pinpoint was off....kept on diggin.
I got down to 11 inches and was about to say the heck with it...I've been fooled. My buddy was tellin me it was just an iron falsing and I didn't believe it...cleaned all the dirt out of the hole...scanned the pile...and still nothing. he scanned the pile...nothing...he scanned the hole....said he was just getting iron.
Took the propointer in the bottom of the hole and started sweeping....BAM!!!!!! It sounded off loud and clear and my heart jumped....he said laughingly...woo hoo...another nail. I grabbed the spot where the pinpointer said it was and lifted the loose dirt out of the hole. Pinpointer waved over my hand and the target was in there. I saw the pretty green color of copper oxidization and squeezed the little ball of dirt and out popped a wheatie...neither of us could believe it. It was pretty rough shape but after a light cleanup at home it turned out to be a 1909 Wheatie...but not a VDB.
Since getting my etrac this year, this is my deepest coin I have ever dug...and I knew it was there. I think the etrac is without question...the most awesome detector out there. TTF is the way to go in the iron. I was skeptical, but now I KNOW...that it works. I will post pictures tonight.
