We searched it only one time 2 years ago and I found a 1817 LC in Excellent Condition, with Full Liberty and nice Green Patina. I think the chimney may date back to the late 1700's but I'm not sure. I also found a small backmarked "Best" Button and a large "Excelsior" Button missing the back, along with plenty of Iron Relics and lots of Iron trash. I would appreciate any help on trying to determine the approximate age of the chimney. I currently use a White's Eagle Spectrum but have a new Minelab Explorer II on order along with the new 4.5 X 7" Eliptical Coil and the 8" Excelerator Coil. Any Newbie Tips and Suggestions would be deeply appreciated. I'm hoping that the adjustment period, going from the White's to the Minelab will not be that difficult. I've been using Strictly White's for about 18 years. Have a 6000 DI pro, Eagle II SL and the Spectrum. I still have all 3 machines, but will be giving the Eagle II SL to my Friend who found the chimney once I get the Minelab. Thanks again, Deh59

Sorry about no picture, all my pictures are running around 205 to 210kB, so I can't get any to upload since the photos can't be any larger than 120kB. I'll try to get some more pictures in a week or two.

Hi deh59,

Try sizing your pics down to 640 x 480 pixels and the should upload OK.

Where you from in NC. I am in the Clinton area. Maybe we can link up. You will be very happy with your new detector, it will round out your collection of detectors.

Happy Hunting,

Jim

Hi James,
I live in Charlotte, NC. The old Chimney site is about 60 miles from Charlotte, on some privately leased land that my friend hunts on. We're going down to hunt it again this Saturday, with another Metal Detecting friend from work. I'll post anything that we find. We're trying to find that rare Bust coin that we can sell at auction and retire on. I have a feeling that there may be something that good laying there just waiting for one of us to swing a loop over it. Do you have any good suggestions when hunting in the woods? Sometimes the trees, logs and stumps start looking the same, and I can't tell if I've already checked that spot or not. Wish us luck, and maybe some day in the near future we can hook up and go hunting together. DEH59

taking some wooden stakes and twine and marking off 25' square grid sections close to the chimney and work your way out in sections.
This way you know where you've been, also get others to scan over the same places with their detectors at different angles before giving up on a section.
Works for me :)
H.H. & Good Luck, it looks like a promising site.
Mike

perhaps once surrounded by a log cabin since I see no signs of rocks from walls. Frequently stone construction (open to the elements) from 1700's will have more mud-like mortor between rocks and much of it will have washed away. Many stones will just have air pockets between them where mortor used to be.

If I had to guess - 1850's maybe later.
