Trying to decide -smaller coil purchase?

First of all, let me explain my equipment and the type places I hunt. I currently use an E-trac with stock coil 8x11. I also use an AT Pro with a 5x8 DD coil. My wife uses a Fisher F2 with a 4" coil. The grounds that I hunt are very trashy with the usual pull tabs and iron nails as well as pretty high mineral deposits. The auto wants to run at 15 or below. I see a lot of potential for the Etrac but I think my coil is covering too much ground to separate the trash. Silver is very hard to come by anyway in my area so I need an edge. Which coil to buy? I heard good things about the SEF 6x8 and the sun ray x-5. I'm thinking I already have the 5x8 on the AT Pro but the Etrac seems to give me more info of what's under the coil. I have found more silver with the Etrac and only owned it a couple of months. Should I get a really small coil like the x-5 or go with the SEF 6x8 based on my conditions and equipment? By the way, I love the F2 but the depth is lacking with the small 4" coil. I haven't seen silver coins less than 5" deep so far. I would love to hear which smaller coils you are using and any good or bad comparisons. Sorry for the long post.
Thanks to all who respond.

Funny I have the exact machines that you do and my wife also has the F-2 with the sniper coil. Only difference is I also have the X-Terra 705. With respect to a small coil for your eTrac you may want to look at/consider the CoilTek 6" Treasureseeker. I use that coil on my eTrac and really love it in trashy areas.

Thanks mad. Do you think a 5x10 would be too much iron/trash under the coil where you hunt? My ATP 5x8 is too much in some of the nail beds I hunt.

I bought a SEF 8x6 this year and it has opened up things for me as far as trashy public parks. But I have better ground than you describe and can run my Etrac almost maxed out or at least at 26.

buy a Coiltek Treasure Seeker either the 10x5 or the 6" round. Coiltek has been making Minelab coils longer than Minelab has, they made them for Minelab before Minelab started making their own

Dpal, I have an ETRAC and both the 6x8 and the 5" sunray. Both have their strong points. The 6x8 can hit deep targets and does well in trash. With the 5", I have been able to hit old neighborhoods that have been turned into parks and pounded to death by other detectors. In 1/2 a day I have pulled 6 silver dimes in all the trash. Some were 1 way hits but sounded good enough to dig. Also I was running in TTF of coarse! Good luck.

Digger that sounds about how trashy some of the places I go. The parks and public areas here are not as old or as populated as the north east I suppose but people tend to really drop their trash and the can slaw is unreal.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I dont have experience with a 5 x 10 but I also run the 5 x 8 on my AT Pro and find it perfect for the soil conditions where I hunt. Check out that 6 " CoilTek Treasuresseeker on YouTube. There are a couple videos comparing it with other smaller coils.

I have the 6" Excelerator EQ2 coil for my E-Trac and love it in trashy areas (especially using TTF). I don't think they make it anymore, but as others above have suggested, Coiltek makes a 6" coil as well and will give you a slight edge over the 5" IMO. This being said, I haven't tried the 6" x 8" coil and can't comment on it, but I do love my 6".

I also hunt trashy areas a lot. I went with the Excellerator 6" over the SEF mainly with the thought a closed coil wouldn't get hung up in stubble/vegetation. The depth is respectible and I've been completely happy with it.

I own/use the 6" Excelerator EQ2 coil also.----It gets very good separation & respectable depth (even in my mineralized ground).-----I think this coil is still being produced---Kellyco still has it listed on their website for $124.95 (with coil cover).----I purchased mine used from a fellow Findmall forum member for $70 delivered, so they do come up FS at good prices once in awhile.------It's a very good small coil & well worth having in your arsenal.

This season I have almost exclusively used my SEF 6x8 and it constaantly amazes me on the depth it gets, and its ability to find goodies in the trash and iron, gets two thumbs up from me

Great posts everyone. It looks like there is not a bad apple in any one of the coils suggested. As usual, funds only go so far. If money were no object I would own one 5x10 or 6x8 and one 5" or 6" round coil to cover all of the basis. Each with an extra lower rod. If I first buy a Small round DD coil, I should get the very best separation but at a cost of painfully slow detecting and sacrifice an inch or two on depth. If I by an elliptical DD type coil first, I'll get the depth and speed but I'll know there is more masking and wish I had the smaller coil. Prices are all over the board so I'll have to buy what I can afford (or at least what my wife thinks I can afford).
Thanks again guys I'll be watching the classifieds.

Lots of good info in the posts!!! I hunt a lot of 1800s home sites turned into farmland...and with all that trash in the ground the 8x6 SEF works very well. Had an X-8 that was collecting dust and was offered an X-5 in trade. Took up the offer but haven't hunted with it yet. I'll try it on the next high trash area hunt.

I use the SEF 6X8 but do not consider it a small coil. The SUN-RAY X-5 is a very good small coil for the E-Trac. Having said that your ground and hunting style may come into play with your decision. Regardless of your choice slowdown in trashy areas and let your machine and coil do it's job. HH :minelab:
