Trying to decide on a Cortes or Tejon.

New member
Hi everyone I am new to this forum. I had a White 6000 Pro it was to heavy for me and my shoulder has arthritis. I tried a fisher Excel and didn't like it. I have a used Tek2 that I bought used and it may need calibrated. Not consistent in ID of target. I am considering one of these two machines Cortes or Tejon. Not having a meter or digital screen might bother me. Any thoughts would be appreciated for this old man. Thank You

If you're after mostly coins, go with the Cortes - relics, go with Tejon.

I have never used a Tejon, so i can't comment on it.
But i have and use a Cortez, and it is a joy to use. It's id #s are very accurate, it is light weight so you don't have to worry about your arm falling off after a day of hunting. I use the stock coil but plan on getting a small coil after the holidays (if i have any money left). I think you will be very happy with the Cortez.

Good Luck

hi burdie, i have both detectors and love them both. but i have to say that i am more partial to the tejon. it does not have a digital screen, but it does have a ground balance that works in both modes, it is more sensitive to small objects and lower conducting metal. it has a fast recovery and has great separation. it is a pleasure to use it in trashy sites. if you are used to TID detectors then you might want the cortes, but if you are willing to try a non TID then i would get the tejon. it will detect deeper than the cortes also. it out does my cortes about a inch to a inch and a half, no kidding. the dual disc. takes the work out of it. if you do get one take the time to learn it. there are several good articles on the tejon, a must read. most people that dont like them, are either using it on the beach not designed for that and dont know how to ground balance. with it you have to ground balance because it affects both modes. the cortes has a manual in the all metal and a preset in the disc. mode. either way you cant go wrong. good luck.

Hey thanks everyone. I have also started reading about the F75 but price WOW. My old White was good for coins and relics. The Tejon being deeper and cheaper get's my attention also. I hear you can change the tones on one of them. Is this true? Was it the Cortes?

I have both the Cortes and Tejon and although I have others, if I had to give up one between the two mentioned, I would keep my Tejon. I hunt by audio and I like manual ground balance. A TID machine (although I have a few) is not a necessity for me. The Cortes is still fairly new to me as I haven't used it much, and it's a fun interesting machine, but the Tejon is just more my style, and I have more confidence in it. It's a workhorse relic machine and I have used it a few times for coin hunts to. My .02 in for my preference.

Not consistent in ID of target.
I didn't care for the Excel, either, not the T2, but will admit I have little field time with the T2 or F-75. I'd take the F-75 over the T2 anyway.

As for the White's 6000 Pro, was it the older 6000 Di Pro (blue) or the 6000 Di Pro SL (black and used the 4-C cell battery pack) or the 6000 Pro XL (smaller housing like the XLT, MXT, M6, Classic SL series)? I can't use the older, heavier 6000 Di Pro SL much anymore due to the weight and balance (lack of), but I DO like the 6000 Pro XL or renamed XL Pro with the smaller slim-line housing as it balances quite well and hunts deep when I use a 6

tabdog my thoughts exactly. Thank you Monte. Superb Information. I had the big black monster 6000 Di Pro SL. I loved that machine but you know I got to the point I would not look at the meter because the tone would tell me what I had. Thinking about the other machines makes me realize I spent a lot of time looking at the ID display. Part of that was caused by my hearing. Some sounds I pick up better than others. Since the Tejon can be adjusted I will announce that I just decided on the Tesoro Tejon. From what all you fine folks have said I can't go to wrong with that machine.
Thanks again every one. I will purchase in January.
I may send in my Tek 2 just to see if it is calibrated correctly.
