trying to decide between 2 HF coils

Hi.

I'm trying to decide between two 18 kHz coils from Minelab. I'm interested in the 10.5 round double D coil and the 5 X 10 double D. I'm not sure which one to choose. Generally the 5 X 10 seems to be favored but I like the increased ground coverage of the round coil. Are each about equal in performance depth wise ? Is pinpointing more precise on the 5 X 10 ? I will be using it mainly at the beach but sometimes in parks and tot lots as well. In an ideal world I would have both but I can't afford it at the moment. Thanks.

They are both gonna give you 10" of coverage. The round one is gonna give you better depth but not by a whole lot. The elliptical one is super light. Ive seen the elliptical one used for about $100 which isn't bad at all for a minelab coil in good condition.
Hope this helps a bit. Do some reading up on them, it will help your decision.

So true... I was blind to the numbers and only looked at the coil images ! Duh. The elliptical would probably serve me better overall. On occasion at the beach I like a bigger coil. I might have to get a NEL or Mars for that or the Minelab 15".

Alot of guys seem to favor the 15" minelab or coiltek coil. To much weight for me to swing...the 5X10 eliptical is featherlight and super sensitive.

That's what I was thinking about the 15" coil as well. I don't know the exact weight but it looks huge on the X-Terra. It must make the detector feel unbalanced to some extent since there is zero weight in the back.

The weights are listed on the sites you buy them from usually and you could probably check the minelab site as well. The 15" I used years ago with a WOT on a Sov, but I don't do big coils anymore.

I use the 18 kHzon the 5 x10 and the 10.5 DD in the 7.5 kHz. The bigger coil has help me nail 2 gold rings in fairly bad ground. Both have their purpose.

Thanks cal. I think those are the ones I'll get.
