Got the TRX today and headed out in the cold to try it. Of course you can not tell anything about these Pin Pointers unless you are actually using them. It was cold and the Wind was blowing. Right away I found the TRX is every bit as loud as the Garrett so this is not an issue unless you can not hear the Garrett. The Vibrate is a bit weak though and I am not sure about the guys who can not hear. The TRX on factory setting is just about twice the depth of the Pro Pointer. I did not change to the full most sensative setting until I got home. I had a little trouble finding objects in the hole. The Tip is more sensative but I think the biggest problem is that the Gradiant response is not as pronounced on the TRX. The Garrett goes to a steady tone when it touches the target but the TRX does not. I was not used to this and at one time I was ready to throw the TRX over the nearest fence.
I found a small earing that was just a stud. It hid really good. The V3i picked it up just under Nickle range. The TRX just barely indicated that something was there from the surface. It showed about 2" so I dug it. I tried to Pinpoint it and it was not there. I thought that thing is just overly sensative. I used my digger and covered the Hole. I ran my Detector over it and there it was again. I tried the TRX and it actually sounded off pretty good. I dug it out again and again it disappeared. I left the Hole open and ran the TRX over everything and it was gone again. Man I was tempted to throw that thing. I ran the V3i over the dirt and hole again and there was nothing. Then it dawned on me to check my digger. I found it in the dirt only after I scraped all the dirt off.
The TRX is mighty sensative but when I got home I changed it to the most sensative setting. I will try this the next time I hunt but I fear that most places I hunt this will not work because there is simply too much trash. Most everytime I layed the TRX on the ground it started a slow beep. I am pretty certain this was not a failure to Ground Balance but a reaction to a close piece of metal.
I found that the TRX to me was constructed more sturdy than the Pro Pointer. I do think that locating a small object like the stud earing is going to be tough on the Higher settings. I have the same trouble with the Pro Pointer and this is aggravated by the Sensativity going all the way up the barrel.
I did find the changes to the settings kind of confusing. I was able to get it done but it took a while. Out in the field this would get me aggraveted pretty quick.
All in all I think the TRX is as good as the Pro Pointer in every aspect except sensativity. It is much more sensative than the Pro Pointer but the objective is to find the target quick and move on. Depth should not be real crucial.
I did not like having to hold the button down a second or two to turn it off.
I did like the real nifty little Holster that came with it. I will not use it because it fits the Holders in my Minelab bag the same if not a little tighter as the Pro Pointer.
I also like the two AA batteries that run it. AA is the standard now and if you buy the low loss batteries and a good smart charger, they are just as good as Alkalines, if not better. (Any of the Rechargebles that are sold "Pre Charged" are low loss.)
I am going to try it on the high setting with the idea that waving it over the hole might help me find the target a little quicker.
I also bought a Pistol Probe so I will try that as well. I think the TRX is going to be a winner for Whites but I do not think it makes the Pro Pointer obsolete. Then again I have had my Pro Pointer a good while and had no troubles at all with it. Some people seem to have lots of trouble with the Pro Pointers breaking down. Whites durability has yet to be tested but I am betting on Whtes passing that test easily.
