Troy Shadow X5

Some of you guys have experience with the X5 over a number of years. What do you think of it? As I said in another post, a friend of mine has one and he can find more good stuff quicker with his X5 than anyone else in our club. He doesn't need an ID meter, but listens to the beeps and uses the machine's features to decide whether to dig, or not. He beats anything I have seen. So, what is your experience with the Shadow? There is a rumor that Troy will come out with a new machine later this year. If so, it will be a good one.

Last I heard was that he could not get anyone to manufacture the X8. You should also read the posts at the time the Shadows came out. As many didn't like it as did. There are regions where the performance isn't brilliant.First thing you had to do in Europe (lots of iron contamination) was replace the stock coil with the smaller stock coil off the X3, and the coils were expensive compared with other brands. Directly the XP's came out, especially the Goldmaxx with audio rejection of iron in the all metal mode at a lower price than the X5, that finished off the Shadows, though the fact there's no repair facilities in Europe depresses second hand prices and makes it a good buy for the money.
If the bloke in your club swapped to a Goldmaxx he would be quicker again as there would be no flicking switches to coin check, the audio says it all.
But don't all rush out for a Goldmaxx. Its even more subject to ground conditions than the Troy and is plough/rolled soil machine. Beach (wet sand) performance is not good even for a single frquency machine.

Generally in mild soil, the X5 is a very nice machine to use and gets nice depth with it's various coils. It hasn't been manufactured for a number of years, so I don't know who would repair them, or even if parts are available. The last I heard, was that Fisher was still honouring some warranty work, but I can't substantiate this. Regardless, they still sell for a premium.

Yes, they are being repaired by Fisher, though the lifetime warranty is only good for an original owner. The machine is EXTREMELY light and easy to swing, even with the eliptical DD coil. I had one and unfortunately let it go. Another is, or will be by Monday, on the way to me. One trick which Troy Galloway (inventor, owner) uses is to drill a hole in a silver dime and put it on his shoe lace in order to test his settings and fine tune it. My friend, Rich, uses a nail to make sure he discriminates them out in the particular soil he is hunting. He finds the most good stuff, and very little junk.
