Troubleshooting question for all you Excal tech gurus

I've encountered an odd Excal glitch/malfunction. On my most recent water hunt, the machine worked just fine the first half of the day....stopped at one point for about 30 minutes. Cranked her back up, good threshold, received my first target (coin signal), but it essentially disappeared. This happened once more, so I ran the coil by my scoop....NO response....doh!!! So basically I now have a rock solid threshold, but no response to any metal....checked all my wires, and none are damage or shorting to the best of my knowledge. I'm thinking whatever is going on must be occuring between the electronics and coil. This is a stock unit that has never been opened up or had any sort of modification. If any of you have any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
Andy

Sound like a back coil wire.

Test.....Put the Excal on a picnic table. while running a target past the coil. Shake the coil wire. See if you get an intermittent tone from target.

It can not be target volume because the scoop should sound off because of it's size.
