Trouble with the Vaquero phone jack

Member
I am having trouble getting the Vaquero phone Jack to make good contact with the headphone jack. I need to kind of manipulate it in and out to get to the correct spot for the headphones to work. Any solution that will not void the warranty and avoid my sending it to Prescott?

Thx,
Homebre in Hillsborough

Try blowing it out a few times with compressed air, like the type used to blow out a dusty computer. You could even use an air compressor, if you have a small tip that fits into the jack. There is the possibility that some dirt / bug / lint got into the jack. This happened on one of my Eldorados; wouldn't sound through the speaker but worked perfectly with headphones. Looks like a spider just crawled in and built a nest. Blew it out a few times to fix. ^_^

Hey there,

Mine has a similar issue. It needs to be pulled out of the jack about 1/4" for it to work correctly. What I did is just put a rubber o-ring on the jack and slid it all the way back. Just plug it in all the way till it hits the o-ring and good to go! You may need to add a thin plastic washer or two behind the o-ring depending how thick of an o-ring you use.

Is your headhone plug a stereo style (3 segment), or a mono (2 segment)? Tesoros use a stereo plug. ^_^

Wow, I never even noticed that pinenut., thanks a lot. I normally run the Vaquero without headphones in the woods but when I do use headphones, I use a 1/4" extension jack and it is mono!

No problem. ^_^

I should have made my original post clearer. I was using an adapter (stereo) for headphones that had a 3.5mm plug to go into the 1/4" socket on the Vaquero. I had 5 different adapters and all had the same problem. I spoke to Rusty, and he asked me if I had tried other adapters, and when I said they all did the same thing, he said send the unit in. But he also suggested I just cut off the 3.5 mm plug and put a 1/4" plug on. I didn't do that but tried another pair of headphones with a standard 1/4" stereo plug. Suddenly there was no problem. Apparently all the adapters were not great fits for the Vaquero socked jack. Thanks to Rusty, the problem was solved. re: o-ring. I will try to add an o-ring to the adapter plug to see if that helps.

Some of the adapters out there aren't the best fit or quality. Only problem I've had when using good headphones, was the one I mentioned previously; a damned bug or lint in the female socket... Blew it out with compressed air and all was good. This was on one of my oldest Tesoros, and it had probably sat for years before I got it (used). That's now one of my favorites, a 15 year old Eldorado. ^_^
